Yet unknowingly a single and vastly powerful mutant lives among them. When he was just a boy, he hypnotized the entire town and raised his farther from the grave. Admitting to his mother that he is the cause of the troubles, and has no control over his powers. His mother lashes out in fear and confusion. Leaving Clyde in a vegetable state for several years.

20 years later (current time: 1985), Clyde was moved to another mental institute. The nurses neglected to bring his comic books. This greatly disturbed Clyde, and begin to manifest and control the comic book characters. Which jump started the entire fiasco in Marvel’s 1985 series.

so, not to "spam" the thread, but where exactly is the link between 1985 clyde and the 'marquis of death'? i read the 1985 series, though i don't remember as many details as i probably should, and i know that millar spoke of all of his works tying together, but where's the transition? what lets us know that clyde was/is doom's master?

Its in the first two posts. To make a short answer. The Marquis claims he is Clyde Wyncham

Oh-ha, another nigh allmigty mutant reality warper? Seems as if Marvel never runs out of those - four or so down (MJJ, Proteus, SW, FR) another one to go.

I found something better. Strait from Frank Miller.
This pretty much certifies, Clyde Wyncham from Marvel 1985 is "The Marquis of Death" and Cannon.

Clyde Wyncham :
Originally responsible for bringing about the events of 1985, Clyde Wyncham was imprisoned for his crimes by Reed Richards and locked away in Area 87 on Earth-616. His alternate-reality self is The Marquis of Death, Doctor Doom's former Master and a being of God-like power.
Alternate Versions
The Marquis of Death is a future incarnation of Clyde Wyncham from a Parallel Universe where he escaped his imprisonment from Area-87 and had his mind fully restored following an attack led by several incredibly powerful supervillains...all of whom he killed with but a thought.
Another future version of Clyde is the Doctor Doom of The Old Man Logan timeline.
---
the 616 "Dooms master" version, the 1985 version, and the Old man Logan version are alternate reality counterparts.

Shifting time and space, the Marquis demonstrates how he has suggested the outcome of millions of alternate realities. He then asks Reed to let him kill his son Franklin. Mark Miller interview over “Marvel 1985”, “Old Man Logan”, and Fantastic Four “Dr. Doom’s Master”.
http://comics.ign.com/articles/949/949454p1.html
So here's how they tie in. 1985 is the origin of Clyde Wyncham. And Clyde is the guy who grows up to be the greatest super-villain of all time far into the future. He is back in the Master of Doom storyline in Fantastic Four. What he's done is he's become the master of all space and time and co-exists from the end of the universe to the beginning through multiple dimensions and so on. He's just the biggest badass, you know? So you have his earliest, embryonic state in 1985 and it kind of explains who he is. So tell sell this in the most cynical way, 1985 is the origin of Dr. Doom's teacher as well as being a nice, little Stephen King superhero story, you know? And Wolverine: Old Man Logan ties into this because, without spoiling the end of 1985, the place where Clyde Wyncham is put at the end of 1985 is broken into in Old Man Logan. For people who've read the story, they know it's about the supervillains all getting together and wiping out the superheroes. So they open all the prisons and they discover this secret prison called "Clyde's Pit" which is where the worst supervillains are kept – the guys we've never heard about. And Clyde is the most dangerous supervillain of all, and he's freed in Old Man Logan. This is referred to in Fantastic Four. So the whole thing is this big, intricate web. Each thing is self-contained but hopefully they make a cool, big story. It's my own little event. After Civil War I kind of wanted to do a one-man event.

Just to show you the vast powers of the Marquis of Death wields. And to cement that he does have mastery over time and space, at all points of time.
Shortly after, Reed refused to kill him off while still in a cationic state (FF #568). Clyde convinced an army of alternate “Fantastic Four’s”, to kill him and his universe to avoid the endless suffering that awaits them.
Clyde effectively plucked them from their alternate reality, and set them against 616 Fantastic Four at that vary instant.

Preview scans. And Reed is probably used to handling high powered beings by now.

Fantastic Four #569
Marquis of Death vs. Clyde and the Fantastic Four.
Ultimately the only way to defeat MoD, was to use his own self. Instead of killing Clyde he is awaked, and agrees to help fight his future self. The battle leaves MoD taxed, which Fantastic Four take advantage of and killed ultimately by Doom.

Fantastic Four #569
Similar to 1985. Clyde Wyncham ~ Marquis of Death. Both summoned and controlled characters as they battled. Among those summoned, are vastly powerful cosmic characters including Odin, Ego, Galactus, Eternity etc….

Marquis of Death claims, that in his weakened state. Forcibly canceling out Clydes powers, and sending their army back to their home dimension could rapture the Multiverse.

Fantastic Four #569
This basically confirms, Marquis of Death was shifting between time and space with Reed Richards. It also goes on state, that universe is crumbling before them.

Durability
As you may already know, Val and Reed where messing with the logic stream used to drain cosmic energy.

Yeah well that device was used to drain the energy from the army of alternate Fantastic Four’s. The Fantastic Four, powers are amplified a thousand fold, against the now weakened Marquis of Death.

Here is where, Reed instructs Human Torch to blast MoD beyond Nova to reach “Planck Temperature”. This was in order to break time and space, to cancel out MoD powers.

But what exactly is “Planck Temperature”?

That’s right, only because MoD was in a weaken form could they pull this off, and effect him with Big Bang temperature. Funny part he actually survives the ordeal before Doom finishes him off. So how do you like them apples?

Now that Master of Doom arc is finished. We can weigh in the extent of Marquis Capabilities. I am certain he has placed himself among the top five Super Mutants, who could vary well challenge Cosmic Hierarchy (Mad Jim Jaspers, HoM Wanda, Franklin Richards, Jamie Braddock).
From his humble begging as Clyde in the Marvel 1985 series where, Clyde manipulated Marvel Comic characters into his reality and controlled them. Including mighty Galactus.

To his abrupt awakening that take place in the near future (The events that set off, Old Man Logan), where villains united to take down the heroes. Among them a crew of villains broke into area 87, that holds and restrains Clyde. In his awakening, he instantly kills the crew of villains. Among them was a Rouge Watcher, and Molecule Man.

Until finally shifting to modern day 616 reality (Fantastic Four #562-569), when he tossed the body of a dead Watcher. Only to appear before the Fantastic Four. Clyde claims (and reinforced by the writer) that he has mastered his powers conquering space and time. And demonstrated these vast powers, when he interlocked himself against his younger self in an inter-dimensional war where once again Marvel Heroes and Villains where not only manipulated. But characters of vast cosmic might, and abstract cosmics where brought into battle as well (Odin, Ego, Galactus, Love, Hate, Eternity).

With out a doubt, it would take someone of a vary significant might. Higher then that of Eternity, and the remaining abstracts to pose a challenge. I am uncertain where Marvel will take this character from here on, apparently he isn’t dead (We have no confirmation of the younger Clyde being dead, only his future self MoD). If more information is revealed it will certainly be posted here.

As usual:
FF wins again with extreme amounts of PIS
Also, I kinda had a feeling Marvel was going to cut off this character sooner or later.
As powerful as Clyde was, he just wasn't all that impressive.
