I think Joss Whedon got the idea for Firefly/Serenity from the animated TV series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers.

As for me, I haven't watch The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers. I'll check it out later.

The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers is a really cool animated TV series that was on back in the '80s. The series combined sci-fi stories with a typical wild-west-"feel".
