The other day a friend asked me if I knew any good modern horror movies and I found myself struggling with this question, I could think of a whole loada good old horror movies but recent ones? The only ones that really came to mind were the hills have eyes remake, dog soldiers (not that recent but still pretty recent and good) and SAW, but thats all I could think of. Has hollywood run out of good horror movies? There seems to be a lot of remakes of old horror films (none that are that good) so another question for this thread is has hollywood also run out of idea's for horror films?

BackFire
The Descent, May, High Tension (shit ending but solid none the less), Martyrs, Let the Right One In, 28 Days Later.

Off the top of my head.

steverules_2
28 days later had a pretty sh*t ending too, I saw the descent and I wasn't too fond of it, I saw high tension and I thought it was a pretty terrible film...I really, really hated it...the only bit I liked was when the girl was chasing her friend with a chainsaw whilst shouting 'I love you!' and thats cuz I found it to be hilarious

Let the right one in...haven't seen it and dunno if it's available here erm

MildPossession
Well it's going to be hard if you think some that have been mentioned already are shit... it's just your bad taste that is making you struggle... stick out tongue

Just look through all the bloody topics, all sorts of good Horror mentioned.

smile

Be happy.

steverules_2
Hey at least I gave these movies a try, you gotta gimme that

Have you seen high tension? Seriously I hated that movie...it was terrible, I'm not gonna advice someone to watch a movie I hated unless I hated them back...I mean you hate the halloween remake right? You gonna advice a person you like to watch it?

Considering that there are at best 2 movies there that could be defined as "bad" movies, I doubt Backfire's the one who's in the wrong here.

steverules_2
I wasn't that much of a fan of 28 days later, plus the ending was just terrible, sorry but for a horror movie that kind of an ending...what the hell!?!

I don't see how that ending was any better or worse than what could have happened.

Should they have found a cure for the disease? Saved the day with machine guns and grenades? I found that end much more satisfying than some ridiculous plot where they come out as heroes. Or god forbid the super-unoriginal twist where zomg, a zombie appears out of somewhere!

steverules_2
Sorry but I wasn't to happy with the whole disney like ending, heck maybe disney shoulda made it...then at least thats the kinda ending I'd have expected and not be dissapointed...

Could've been a lot worse...It could've been 28 weeks later.

4 out of 6 are brilliant. Silly kilt wearer.

Martyrs and High Tension are the only one's that I don't really think are truly great, but solid and worth seeing none the less.

Also, Roman. A spiritual successor to May, written and starring Lucky McKee and directed By Angela Bettis, is excellent. Not a full horror, though. A hybrid, much like May.

Also, we should define 'modern'. If modern counts as 90's then there are a bunch more. If 'modern' are only films from the last few years, then he's pretty much ****ed cuz there aren't very many.

Also, Irreversible. Not horror but extremely disturbing.

There are plenty of great, modern horror movies. Considering that the horror genre has become so popular there are probably more good horror movies being produced today than ever before. There are at least just as many good ones as say...,the 70's or 80's. The movie's may not be as impactful but that's because the boundaries of what's acceptable have been greatly extended, thanks to the pioneers of the 70's and 80's.

I don't know what we're meant to discuss here because there really are a nearly countless list of fine horror flicks out there. They may not be masterpieces but there are a lot. The only problem is having to sift through all of the shit. Since Horror is the easiest type of movie to make there are just so many. Without a good reference website or forum like KMC you must force yourself to endure blind viewings, hoping for the best. Although, even with good websites like Bloody-disgusting and internet forums i find that people expect far to much from horror movies. I generally end up enjoying many horror movies that are panned by critics and forumers. Unless they are instant classics like, Descent, or Let the Right one in, many people seem to dislike a lot of horror flicks.

End of the Line
Rec
Books of Blood
Severance
Inside
Drag me to Hell
Slither
Rogue
Frontiers
28 days later
Joshua
Trailer park of terror
anatomy
session 9
them
stir of echoes
Laid to Rest
dead mans shoes
Exorcist the beginning ( i dont care what you bitches say that's a good movie)

Thats what i can think of off the top of my head. I know there are loads more.

As for the remakes. I actually like the idea of having remakes. Most are garbage but some are quite good and in some cases, better than the originals.

BackFire
Oh yes, Rec and Session 9 are both great. Them is quite good too.

HueyFreeman
I hated Martyrs. I did enjoy them though. Let the Right One in was the best Horror movie I seen in a while. I heard the children was ok.

4 out of 6 are honking guff stains on an old man's pants, you undeniable poop-stabber.

BackFire
Are you coming onto me?

RocasAtoll
Inside seems to be the only one forgotten. Frontiers wasn't bad either.

I like the way you think.

Shame you have such awful taste (in movies, obviously not in men).

Frontiers was terrible. Gore for shock value is pointless and extremely boring. This is exactly why films like Martyrs and Grotesque are utter piles of crap. Why bother watching them when the internet is chock full of actualy real violence.

Go watch the footage of the Nigerian witch burnings if you truly want shocked.

Off the top of my head. Martyrs and Let the Right One In for sure.

I'd also throw in Silent Hill. Not the greatest film, but it's a good watch. The atmosphere was perfect.

BackFire
How dare you.

My gaydar is flawless.

Frontiers was exploitative, but Martyrs made sense. The violence had a purpose.

Silent Hill deserves to be mentioned, I agree.

steverules_2
Yeah I actually kinda liked silent hill smile I just hope the sequel (if it comes) is good

I actually kinda liked the first resident evil movie though i doubt anyway here will agree

I liked practically all of the Resident Evil movies.

I wouldn't refer to them as "Good horror movies" though, or good movies for that matter big grin

steverules_2
Neither would I, when I saw these movies I wasn't like 'oh wow these movies are great' but I didn't say 'I wish I had a screw driver right now to gouge my eyes out' so yeah...didn't think they were too bad smile

Eden Log was also a good movie, I enjoyed that.

I'm surprised Backfire didn't mention Inside. I guess he's not a true horror fan like me 313

BackFire
Inside was decent. I wasn't hugely impressed with it, though.

I can't decide whether I liked that or Martyrs better.

Well, they didn't do that much explaining.

steverules_2
That was a big reason why I disliked it

I think I read it was a low budget movie or something like that, if it was low budget then it was pretty good for a low budget...not as good as terminator though smile Love that film

A purposed that couldn't have felt more shoe-horned in. It was a tacked-on after thought so as to try and avoid the most stupid genre label ever created...torture porn.

At least Grotesque actually had the balls to admit what it is and not try to hide behind some 2nd rate idea.

Nah. It fit, at least to me.

We all have our different views and opinions on horror movies and movies in general

MildPossession
Leave the Martyrs, Inside(to the person who said we missed it, we have talked about Inside a lot in the relevent topics), Eden Log and so on discussion to the topics on the actual films *******! This is a topic for Jaden and Backfire.

jaden101
It would certainly fit in the horror section anyway. MP just wants to flick the bean over the thought.

MildPossession
Are they calling it a bean now... how quaint. stick out tongue

steverules_2
Oh great...you kids and your beans

HueyFreeman
Drag Me to Hell, Feast, and Trick R Treat were fun movies.

Kris Blaze
Feast dude, really?

MildPossession
He said fun, and Feast was indeed a fun horror, not fantastic, but definitely fun.

Huey - Tell us what you thought of Trick 'r' Treat in the topic about the film. smile

i watched session 9 last night...considering how much i'd heard about it being an under the radar awesome horror, it was poor.

Also watched martyrs recently and didnt think it was all that.

Shutter island is a sort of horror (for the first 3/4s anyways) and unlike any pure horros ive seen since the shining, i felt really uncomfortable and uneasy throughout the entire movie.

Likewise, The Road had some pretty uneasy and scary moments.

Im not sure pure horror is for me cause im really struggling to find good horror films...still think SAW 1 is amazing and has ana amazing twist (one of the first times i didnt see a twist coming in a horror film)

ThreadKiller
I am more into Action-Horror or creature flics like Jeepers Creepers, Resident Evils, Dawn of the Dead old and new.

Not into the torture porn and Martyrs was boring as hell. I just saw End of the line and it was ok.
