Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night is an annual celebration on the evening of 5 November. It celebrates the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, were alleged to be attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, England.

I love fireworks two weeks left till 5th NOV Happy Dance

Shakyamunison

What do the Catholics in England think of this?

Remember, remember the fifth of November: the gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

Yes, can't wait. Where I live, the community builds a massive bonfire, and buy the fireworks for a lovely display. Also serving free soup, hot potatoes, toffee and so on. Yay.

smile

Just hope it doesn't rain again, rained last year and most of the fireworks didn't blast off properly...

I wonder how many people knew all the words to that before V for Vendetta came out?

I certainly didn't know anything beyond the 1st line.

Not to mention that Fawkes himself was believed to be the single most minor player in the whole plot.

Bicnarok
We used to go around the bonfires the night before and put aerosol cans and battery's in the pile, was fun to watch them go up the following night, probably dangerous though so don't do it.

i don't know if i have the era right, but if we're talking about scotland and england, weren't they both like... CATHOLIC catholicism? because england didn't become protestant until henry VIII, then his daughter, bloody mary, started a sort of spanish inquisition and rooted out all protestants and jews.

could someone help me with this? because i'm very confused.

One Free Man
Bloody marry died in 1558, her anti protestant actions were reversed by her successor and half sister Elizabeth I.

The gunpowder plot happened in 1605.

Excellent, I´m making up for sleeping through history lessons at school in this thread. Was Guy Fawkes a Jesuit by any chance?
