Ok the title should be clear enough. But just in case:

Here are a few examples off the top of my head:

* The opening scene in "Falling Down" (1993) is a homage to the opening scene in Fellini's "8 1/2" (1963).

* The opening scene in "Jackie Brown" (1997) is a homage to "The Graduate" (1967).

* The ending credits scene in "The Life Aquatic" (2004) is a homage to ending credits scene from "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension " (1984).

I love little salutes like these in films (especially when the movies doing the homage is good itself). Please help me compile a list. Please DO NOT include blatant parodies. Thank you!

Almost everything Simon Pegg writes and directs are homages to different movies or games. Some are very subtle and some clearly aren't. So much so that in his series "Spaced" they include a "homage-o-meter" as part of the dvd extras which works as an alternate set of subtitles which every time a homage comes on, it is named on screen.

Specific examples pwese?

When Simon Pegg's character in "Shaun of the Dead" wraps the red bandanna around his forehead, it is an homage to "The Deer Hunter."

In Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, whenever Yoda runs his hand over his head, it is an homage to Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" as the main character "Kambei" does the same.

The Nipples on Ozymandias' suit in "Watchmen" are an homage to Joel Shumacher's Batman films.

Not sure if it counts, but whenever Dr. Cox taps his nose with his finger, it is an homage to Robert Redford's character in "The Sting"

Thanks guys...don't mean to to sound like dick but I was looking for like whole scenes, rather than little things.

Good stuff though.

What about self-referential stuff or fan service?

Blinky
Nah. I thought my requirements were clear enough, I guess not.

Look at the examples i posted --- they are WHOLE MOVIES SCENES that are a tribute (not parodies) to other WHOLE MOVIE SCENES.

Incompetents deserve to be alienated.

The only scene I can think of off the top of my head is the scene in Requiem for a Dream, the overhead shot of Marion (Jennifer Connelly) in the bath then the shot of her screaming underwater. It was originally in the Japanese anime Perfect Blue. Darren Aronofsky apparently bought the remake rights to the film just to use that one scene.

Blinky
Never seen "Perfect Blue", I'll have to check that out.

Thanks, keep them comin'.

Swingers borrows a few scenes from Scorsese and Tarantino films.

Blinky
Never seen "Swingers".

Any specific scenes you can name?

Not just that. They are talking at the table about how Tarantino rips off everything from Scorsese, while they are tongue-in-cheek ripping off the camera shots of the breakfast table & walk to the cars right from Reservoir Dogs. wink
Also later in the film, when they are entering the club from the basement area, they are paying homage to Scorsese's famous Steadicam shot of Henry Hill entering the Copa from GoodFellas.

Good stuff. I'll have to see Swingers in the near futrue.

A more obvious one :

Joe the King (1999), as a whole, is a homage to The 400 Blows (1959).

This is confirmed by the final shot of the movie.

Both of these movies are great, IMO. Anbody who likes The 400 Blows should see Joe the King.

!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!

On the topic of Simon Pegg flicks, there is a line in HOT FUZZ after Sergeant Angel is taken out of town by Danny, and he's trying to convince Danny to return to town with him and fight the N.W.A., and Danny says, "Forget it, Nicholas. It's Sandford." This is a take on the final line of Polanski's "Chinatown," when someone tells Jake, "Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

And there are several references to Fight Club in Old School. Check the Old School trivia
