Who's the most recognizable character in video games? Nintendo legend Mario? Helmeted Halo lead Master Chief? Football legend John Madden? No -- according to the 2010 Gamers' Edition of the Guinness book of world records, ever-hungry retro icon Pac-Man edges the win.

i read in game informer that mrs. pac man was more popular that pac man was. and i thought Mario might've taken the guinness title but it was pac man.

Quincy
Pac-Man? Over Mario? Really?

Of course.

Smasandian
I say that makes sense.

The character has been around since the 70' and people who played Pac Man when they were kids/teenagers who stopped playing games after that would know it.

well, she's a bit of a tramp, so...

Ridley_Prime
Pac-Man huh? I'm fine with that.

Kyrie Illunis
They're wrong. It's mario.

Quincy
Honestly I can see more people not knowing who "Pac-Man" is than Mario.

Smasandian
Just this week, I was playing Super Mario Bros Wii and half of the family had no idea who Mario was.

But I would betcha they knew Pac Man.

The reason is because he's the first mascot so everybody who played the arcades would know who he was because there wasn't a lot of competition. They stopped (from evidence of the video game crash) and then the NES came out for the newer generations of kids. If you didn't play games after that there is a chance you never knew about Mario.

But Pac-Man has been around since the beginning and games are still being created.

In the end, there is no way of quantifying how many people know each character but there is a good chance Pac-Man would come out ahead.

Pac Man actually came out in 1980.

Smasandian
One year off, I'm sorry but my point remains the same.

Scythe
I would have thought it'd be a Tetris block.

Guiness is wrong, and it's by far not the first time they've been wrong, either.

What they say is not automatically a fact.

The only way they could prove Pac-man is the most recognizable video game character is by doing a MASSIVE psychological study all over the world across as many demographics as possible. Then, have their results duplicated and peer reviewed (within an acceptable margin of error, of course).

The correct answer is Mario, not Pac-man.

That half has been living under a rock.

Just curious, is that half of the family also hard pressed to do things on the internet above checking their e-mail?

Everyone knows it's Cloud (kidding)

Oh and Michael Jackson would win this (he was a video game character for the Sega Genesis and Arcade) so it counts!

So when you say its Mario, that's fact right?

Oh, because the Internet is around to look up videogame information? That's why its there right?

Then I can suppose that you've done a MASSIVE psychological study all over the world across as many demographics as possible? Then, had your results duplicated and peer reviewed and came to the conclusion that it was indeed Mario? Good to know that we have such dedicated people around here.

Quincy
So, Pac-Man is older than Mario by a year? I mean, maybe really really old people will know who Pac-Man is and NOT know who Mario is, but to be the worlds most recognizable character?

Just doesn't add up.

ESB -1138
Let's just all agree to send me one dollar.

MooCowofJustice
I don't think that's true, but I could see why if it were.

And dadudemon, your signature and avatar are still looking delicious.

Do you not realize how much of a hypocrite you make yourself sound like here?

"They're absolutely and totally wrong because they didn't do four billion different studies about it. Oh, and by the way, my opinion is right."

I'd be willing to believe that Pac-Man is more recognizable than Mario. Not everyone owns (or has owned) a video game console, but I'm sure most people have at least seen an arcade once, and Pac-Man is still to this day an arcade staple. Even if it's just as small and simple as a couple game cabinets in the waiting area at the local pizza place, you're more likely than not to find a Pac-Man machine.

General Kaliero
Consider this: Take a pie, pizza, giant cookie, or really any circular object. Cut just one slice out of it. Who is it?

Now, go anywhere and make the "wakka wakka wakka" sound. Who doesn't know who it is?

Ms.Marvel
who is it?

im serious. no expression

No it doesn't. He has to originate as a video game character (not just be in a game) for it to count.

Fozzy Bear?

§P0oONY
(To the Pacman Mario debaters) Who cares? Most people know both and if they don't know one or the other it's not really a big deal... they just don't have enough of an interest.

But I'd be inclined to go with Mario if we're having the debate though, all children of today know who Mario is (as games with him in are still being made, and I mean proper games)... Pacman... It's possible they won't know him because he's less publicised.

That was a joke, dude. After I said all that I said, and then I claim that it's Mario, it should be obvious that I'm being facetious.

No. The implied is that they are modernly deficient and are obviously not keeping up with trends/society.

You're 0/2, bud. Improve or I'll steal the harddrive in your 360. no expression *

*And, just in case you also misinterpret that as serious, it was a joke. I won't steal anything.

Edit - I just noticed that EVERYONE who commented on my post didn't get that me claiming it was Mario AFTER making a long-a$$ comment about how the only way to properly determine the results, is obviously a joke/sarcasm/facetiousness. Of all people, I thought Peach would get that cause she's...smart n'stuff.

FistOfThe North
dadudemon, you're KMC's most recognizable character. definetely.

and that's a fact.

Yeah, because keeping up on trends about videogames is what everybody does nowadays.

Nemesis X
Yellow dots eating nothing but smaller dots and ghosts is more recognizable than Italian plumbers rescuing princesses from evil turtles? I'm surprised it's PacMan, I always thought it was Mario.

No End N Site
I'm surprised it wasn't a Tetris Block, but I can see Pac Man bein' in the Guinness book for this and I'm cool wit that. It makes sense.

That would include many items, one of which would include knowing who "Mario" is.

Impediment
Mario would be my first guess.

Pac Man? He's old school and iconic.

He deserves the spot.

Mrs. Pac Man is a hungry whore.

I took it another way.

Considering trends/society is a generic term, I assumed you meant gaming because we were talking about Mario.

But I guess your an idiot if you don't know the current trends in food and clothing.

Not really. I never said that, either.

However, I did say, "No. The implied is that they are modernly deficient and are obviously not keeping up with trends/society."

Almost 30 years of an industry that permeates every facet of entertainment, is kind of hard to miss.

I take that as calling people an idiot for not knowing newer industries.

not really surprising since Pac-Man's been around so long
plus but i remember my math teacher using him to help us remember "greater than" and "less than" math equations

Now hum the beginning to the Super Mario Bros theme song. Who doesn't know that?

And speaking of which, I know a lot of Japanese people who don't know who Pacman is (or Godzilla for that matter).

SaTsuJiN
I can agree with pac-man.. people tend to have lasting memories of atari / really old arcade games.. even if they arent a gamer..

cuz most people in one way or another is going to have come across Pakkuman and Gojira at one point in their lives.. especially in japan where they actually bother advertising those on the streets.. compared to america where even just a few years ago (when game stop was funco-land, and buying used gaming products didnt mean that the box looked like it went through a sarlac pitt).. they damn-near treated gaming advertisements like they're porn and just hide them in an alleyway or something XD

anyways.. I would have also chosen something from the atari / arcade era as well.. but I would have went for donkey kong or something (before mario was mario)
