I've notice when I shoot video of animals, and I've shot all kinds, most of them are very interested, scared, or intimidated by the camera. My theory is that the lens looks like a giant eye staring at them. As animal experts will tell you, you shouldn't stare at certain animals in the eye because they think you are challenging them. Perhaps the octopus felt threatened by the eye.
