Not groundbeaking headlines or anything, but as a fan I'm confused, so I thought I'd mention it. What do you guys think about this in relation to the last episode of South Park:

I'm not sure I buy it. When I watched it I thought the long beeps were just a joke that I couldn't quite get. And that the parts where they censor Muhammad were also jokes on censorship. I do know that the episode wasn't that offensive, its nothing on Family Guy levels, though they do rip on Muhammad an awful lot. But, I mean, censoring South Park is just wrong. Its against everything the show stands for. They even did 2 episodes specifically railing against this sort of thing. erm

Btw, if people think this should be in the TV forum can a mod move this please?

I am with you on this. I thought it was just a joke, but the end part that was bleeped, was really annoying, and I'm glad that it was not on purpose. We should all get pictures of (censored) and plaster them all over the place.

Damn, even I was censored. mad

I found the way they were censoring it to be hilarious. Probably more funny than if they hadn't. Whether they were forced to or not I think it was a quality episode.

So 201 was pulled from the website as was Super Best Friends and Cartoon Wars will likely be pulled too. No word on whether the DVDs will be pulled from stores too. Rather than doing that, why didn't they just press charges and arrest everyone at Revolution Muslim. Threats aren't protected speech.

Lawyers from Comedy Central say that the wording was carefully selected so that they cannot press charges.

my interpretation was that the fact they were forced to censer themselves just made them rip on the whole situation worse....the long beeps at the end i found to be very humorous.....it was obvious they were just doing that to poke fun at the people that wanted them to censer it in the first place

on a side note the original scott teddermen ep was awesome....and i loved the connection

Not only that, they're always really specific US pop culture references. Being from the UK I probably get less of them than you. This is the main reason why American Dad is better than Family Guy... As it's pretty similar without the stupid cut aways. (Plus there is Roger.)

I think they were making a fairly good point, if we can make fun of other religious leaders (Jesus, Joseph Smith, Tom Cruise) then it isn't right for networks to say "oh, just don't mock Muhammad".

As Kyle said in one episode "it's either all ok, or none of it's ok".

As Kyle said in one episode "it's either all ok, or none of it's ok". Kyle also said "shut up, fatass" whenever Cartman mocked him, his mother or his people. I guess the freedom of speech only works to the point when someone gets offended. Ofcourse the show shouldn't be banned but there's nothing wrong with some people hating it and making threats. I mean, insult someone on the street and expect to either get sued or punched in the face. That's how it works. Also all it does is makes the show more popular.

Pandemoniac
I just would like to believe that the censorship on this episode was a wink to the religious extremist suppression of free speech, but I am afraid that this time they truly got scared. Might be nothing, but the reference to Theo van Gogh they made reminds me how vulnerable you can be in in a free world as long as it has lunatics next door, seeping in and trying to take over

The writers explicitly stated that much of the censoring was added in by a frightened network.

Mindship
All the networks should synchronize as many shows as possible to show/say something "offensive" about Islam. This way the radicals can't pick on any one show, and they'll just have to try to destroy America...

...oh, wait, they already are.

well setting the end aside the censoring of that episode was wrong in every way and comedy central was stupid for doing it....the group of radical Muslims that are living in new york that made those death threats should be found and sent to jail

but like i said before the ending was definitely made that way on purpose

Its just in some countries you call someone's mother a "whore" and you'll get "F you!" as a responce, in others you'd get punched and in some countries people would kill you for calling their mother a "whore" because insults isnt a normal thing for them like it is for us. Its hard to understand unless you've lived there but it doesnt make it wrong, maybe by US or UK standarts only. Im personally ok with that.

Also, we aren't talking about two people on the street, we are talking about a religious organization based in NY making death threats to two writers.

No more wrong than saying "i'll kick your ass" when someone insults you in any way. A threat is a threat. And yeah, I know I was just making an analgy. Anyway, I think it's bs, they cencored it on purpose.

Death threats are more wrong than threats of saying "I'll kick your ass". Just like if each of those threats were to be carried out one is more wrong than the other.

But that wasn't really the whole point I was making. One is an entire organization, one is just one guy.

Anyway, threats are wrong, simple as that.

I tend to agree with you

I haven't seen anything other than the initial press release from Matt and Trey from the relevant parties, so it is really hard to tell.

For comparison, when Issac Hayes left and there was that controversy, both did several interviews about the situation, iirc. I know one of them was on the Penn Gilette radio show at the time.

I don' think he'd give a shit if a cartoonist made him a bear (just so long as it wasn't a pig). He repeatedly told people that he wasn't divine, just as human as them. "Do not prostrate before me in adoration. I am but a messenger, a plain warner." But a lot of today's Muslims elevate him more than he would have wanted.

Most Muslim art does not depict him at all. If so, he has no face. See this early Muslim painting? http://www.sol.com.au/kor/kor_pix/15/Islam.JPG His faced is not there to avoid idolatry, so people don't worship him. A lot of Buddha statues in Western China are like that painting, because Muslim invaders chopped off their defining features. Its also the reason the Sphinx is missing its nose and beard--Muslims got rid of them.

So I think that has more to with it, than making him a giant teddy bear.
