Phlegyas was a demigod who was slain by Apollo. After his death, Phlegyas was transformed into a demonic giant thrown into the fifth circle of Hell, Anger. He serves as the ferryman of the river styx.

Dante's Inferno:
Dante signals Phlegyas via beacon and jumps on the "boat" to cross the river styx. At first, the crusader wasn't aware he was riding on his crown until he emerges from the water. Later, Dante takes control of Phlegyas and uses the giant to go through the City of Dis. They both get on a bridge that has both sides suddenly collapsed. As a last resort, Dante makes Phlegyas stomp the ground which causes the rest of the bridge to collapse. Dante jumps off and clings to a wall while Phlegyas falls into the infernal abyss and it's unknown whether Phlegyas survived the fall or not (although it's mostly possible that he most certainly did die).

Abilities:
Due to his size, Phlegyas has super strength. His fists can be covered in fire when he punches. He can also breathe fire which is powerful enough to knock down stone buildings.

Trivia:
Phlegyas bears a resemblence to Perses, the Titan of Chaos and Destruction seen in Santa Monica's God of War III.

Phlegyas's roar sounds a lot like the roar heard from the Hive Mind from EA's Dead Space and Dead Space Extraction.
