Wut?

Props to FinalAnswer for posting this originally.

Do we have to drop some more bombs on them just to read One Piece erm

Only applies to people under 18. They actually mention this in the article but completely ignore it and act like its the end of the world.

danteiscool
seriously? is that really true? if so then I'm sure that many people (myself and most of my friends included) are going to be pissed about this.

so manga, anime, and games are the only things that they're banning when there's plenty of other things going around that are supposedly just as bad or worse. that's dumb, why would they ban or edit out two very profiting industries like that (I'm counting manga and anime as one inudstry)?

really, what the hell? I mean, they're just pretty much hurting themselves in the end given how much of a fanbase Manga/anime and games have.

Cause we all know that once a person reaches 18 years of age they are completely unaffected by violent media and therefore can enjoy reading all the murder and rape as they please.

Seriously though, this won't last regardless. It's too stupid to last. Not that it affects me in the slightest, but whatever.

Esomark
This bill reeks of Tipper Gore. It's totally silly.

It's a cute read but as Kandy said, it only affects younglings so I don't care. I suppose I could care if I want my children to read violent media -or it could affect the markets, but seriously, they won't stop printing One Piece because of something this dumb-, but then again, I could just buy it for me and hope my kids are smart enough to read it without my permission.

(I'm giving japanese people a key here shifty )

Luckily for me I was born over 18.

Were you born over 9000?

That still sucks for me! Damnit! mad

danteiscool
I agree with wakkawakkawakka. I'm not 18 yet either.

so that's what it said. I must have missed that part in the article. and now that I've calmed down a bit, I agree with you guys. it's not the end of the world (although if such a thing affected me the way I originally thought then I could kiss an almost frequent hobby of mine goodbye) and it is a stupid law. wonder if/when the law is revoked or whatever.

What his means to me:

We will see more and more digital works occuring. I would like to see more subscriptions to digital services because I am tired of region specific restrictions.

That goes for violent, criminal, or other types of stuff that some people hate. I am also tired of the anti-violent game crowd carding me everytime I purchase a rated M game: that's their only way of protesting games that they think I shouldn't play when I'm obviously 17 or older.

Peeps, let me explain how this law affects us here in America:

It doesn't.

This law, regulates sale of manga with mature themes to those over 18. That's fine by me, I wouldn't want people selling hentai to my kids under the excuse that "its just a cartoon!". When the manga is licensed in the US, this law is of no force; the US distributors can decide what age to classify it as, and there are no laws in place that give those age classifications the power to actually restrict sale. In all likelihood, all that we'll see happen is that ecchi manga will be classified as 18+ in Japan, and will be sold in the US exactly as they always were.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe your post fails to see how the ability to have "market penetration" will directly impact sales of otaku related items. This is the entire point of the thread/complaints about the law.

Why can not the otaku items simply be rated?

Also, I've read Ecchi manga such as Tenju Tenge: shouldn't there be a "mature" section with a "prove of DOB" verification process to keep 8 year olds from buying what I, myself, would consider to be somewhat pornographic? (You could call my attitude generally "ero" to begin with, but some of that seinin stuff is pornographic at parts)

That seems like a much simpler solution rather than banning stuff from non-adult-licensed ships.

Know what I mean, dude?

Um, that's exactly what this does. Adult manga has to be relocated to "adult only" sections of bookstores that require ID to buy from. Manga with adult themes are not going to be banned; they're simply being forced to relocate to 18+ sale.

I thought it would require it to be in adult only stores, not sections, which would greatly reduce their ability to sell.

Edit -

"The generally expected form the law will take is that of a “amakudari” (a pervasive system of sinecures for retired bureaucrats) body which will inspect all anime, manga and games, with only those titles receiving approval as “healthy” able to be sold regularly in Tokyo shops – the rest will be relegated to the “adult corner.”"

Okay, cool. that's not so bad.

I agree with you, then.

I misread that. I do nt know what "regularly" means. But shit has to get a "healthy" rating? WTF?

So their rating system will be healthy or adult? that seems kind of silly.

danteiscool
by healthy, they mean a person's mental health. if a mentally unhealthy underage person got his hands on say, Tenjho Tenge, then there's a chance he might be influenced by it and maybe try to imitate what's in the manga.

okay, now that the law has been explained, I'm not as upset as before. now if it had also affected people over here in America (myself included of course) then that would have been frustrating.

Reading is tech gentlemen.

But yeah, 156 is clearly biased. All acts that may be sexually stimulating and cause criminal behavior are prohibited from Anime and Manga...But is allowed in live action? Is that right.

Bentley
Manga is more appealing to kids methinks.

danteiscool
don't know why they'd still pass this law if most of the things that kids may try to imitate are absolutely impossible to pull off (like an energy attack such as the kamehameha wave). then again there those other aspects of manga that kids will try to do.

Impossible, true for now, but such claims need testing to verify that it is truly impossible. Science perfects its understanding of the laws to ever greater degrees of accuracy, as it does every anomaly becomes ever more improbable, at the same time highly advanced science may yield devices where a single word, a bit, or a digit may cause a systemic collapse.

Say The few russian leaders got nihilistic froma single word and decided to end it all?

I'm not sure how many of you looked beyond the first link to the original article.

Assault, being a crime would throw any fighting under the bus as well.

Of note is the line:

"presumably most will then be cancelled due to a lack of suitable magazine or tankobon distribution channels"

Something cancled in japan doesn't have much hope of being imported over here.

The industry DOES regulate itself.
