Did you go to university?
Why or why not?
What did you study?
Did you get a degree? What degree?
Do you think it is useful/important?

etc etc coot

That ACDC Chick

obviously, if it doesnt happen, ill try my best to register for classes, but if it does happen, i obviously cant cause ill be recovering and that takes months to do

I am currently studying at a university. I'm doing so because it'll further my potentials in life and because I love to learn big grin I'm currently studying practical philosophy. I have not yet finished any course but I'm striding for a degree in Didactics. I'm currently studying practical philosophy as a preparation course before I take on the Didactics program smile

I think it's very important to study at the university. It brings you to a whole different league of thinking and knowing. You'll see the world through new eyes because of all the things you frequently learn happy

AbnormalButSane
Yes. I do go to uni to learn, but if I'm being honest, my parents would not accept my not going to college. I could learn on my own, but a degree is pretty much required for most jobs these days.

I study mathematics and physics. I'll be receiving a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Physics hopefully in May of next year.

Then hopefully I'll be attending graduate school...if I get accepted somewhere...which is unlikely. mmm

RE: Blaxican
I go to a community college because going to a university straight out of High School is a waste of money.

I'm taking my general ed. classes atm with a few fun BS classes sprinkled in, and ultimately I'm aiming for a degree in Computer Science, though I'm also getting A+ Certified on the side. Once I'm done with all that and I've got a decent job I'm going back to School to get a degree in engineering and electronics.

Going to College is important because in this day and age a college degree is almost a requirement to get a good job. However, the idea that someone who's gone to college is smarter than someone who hasn't is a misconception. There is nothing you can learn in College that you can't learn elsewhere.

Hmm. Sounds delightful.

In uni/college/whatever now. I've decided I really like college and I don't think I ever want to graduate. My university has a law school and I'm thinking about applying there when I get old and have to quit being an undergrad.

Barker
NOPE. Been out of High School two years now.

Thinking really hard about starting my Graphic Design degree this fall though.

Utsukushii
Did you go to university? Yes, I did
Why or why not? Because, at the time I felt like it was the right thing to do.
What did you study? I was majoring in English with a minor in Spanish
Did you get a degree? What degree? No I did not
Do you think it is useful/important? It depends on what you're wanting to do with your life. If you're wanting to be a doctor or a lawyer, then yes it's very important. But for what I want to achieve, it's just a waste of time and money.

Did you go to university?

- Yes, at the University of Teesside.

Why or why not?

- To improve my skills, learn to live on my own and do my own things. I tend to feel sometimes I mainly went because my friends from college did too.

What did you study?

- Well firstly I took Computer Animation but started to dislike the subject and also had a falling out with the friends I went down to Middlesbrough with so I transferred to Computer Games Art, moved into a uni house with some foreign guys and stuck with that course.

Did you get a degree? What degree?

- Yes, a BA (Hons) in Computer Games Art. It was tough with all the deadlines, modules and In Course Assessments (ICAs) but I eventually got it all done, even scored well on some modules I didn't think I would.

Do you think it is useful/important?

- Don't really know, I guess it can help to get your foot in the door, especially with the work placement years they offer you; but sometimes courses can be poorly structured, leaving the students to miss out on skills the industries would rather you were being taught. I know the course I was on suffered a lot of criticism for this, which led to some resentment between the students and the course leader.

Did you go to university? Yes
Why or why not? To live up to my parents' expectations of me and because you need a degree to get a decent job these days.
What did you study? Journalism, but I dropped out, Hotel Management, but I dropped out. Then I studied to become a Proces Operator, and I finished that last year.
Did you get a degree? What degree? Yes, Proces Operator.
Do you think it is useful/important? Well it definitely is useful, to get a job at least. Though I guess you could lead a perfectly happy life without ever getting a degree, so hippies could argue how important it actually is.

Mist_haermm
Did you go to university?
Yep

Why or why not?
Finished school, thought it was the thing you 'had' to do to get a job srug

What did you study?
Comp Science and Multimedia

Did you get a degree? What degree?
Nope, spent 2 years there and dropped out. Did a specialist course elsewhere, got qualified through that.

Do you think it is useful/important?
Depends what you want to do. I have friends who did engineering etc and you just wont get a job in that field if you don't have a degree. My own xp is completely different though, I found everything they were teaching was only a general overview and was outdated. Also had to do crappy unrelated subjects like language or social studies as complementary crap to the course, thought that was a waste of my time and money.

Specialist course on the other hand was more than half the price and taught me exactly what I wanted. I've seen showreels from people who got their degree in the same field and their work is just ****ing crap.

tl;dr -
uni = theory
spec course = prac

Went for a while, got disenfranchised by the fact that I was learning things I taught myself how to do years ago. I was going for graphic design, and in at least one class I actually knew more than my teachers did.

I'll go back eventually to finish up a degree of some sort, but honestly it's not required for every field, and for what I want to do, a strong portfolio is more important.

Oh really?

I may be interested in purchasing things.

Do you sell the massage chairs or Home Theater items like sound panelsf?

To keep from getting in trouble from the mods, PM me details. I am looking to put together a home theater and my budget is $20,000 or less. The room will be 20x15, the sound system will be 7.1 or 7.2.

As stated earlier, I also want a decent massage chair, but I don't want to spend $5000 on one. Between $1000-$2000 is about my range.

At least your parents care. My dad always resented the fact that I decided to prioritize physics over economical mathematics and the fact that I rejected a summer job offer in logistics he helped me get didn't make it better.

If you think that's bad we only had 1 hour per week with a former professional comic artist, after that we had to fend for ourselves on the creative side at least. There wasn't even a 'concept art' module, which is apparently there now so we did influence things eventually, just not in time for us.

Nothing on concept art or anything of the sort? Wow. One of the classes I took that was helpful was literally called Conceptual Thinking. If you're no good at coming up with initial ideas and concept sketches - and lots of them - you're going to have trouble with your final products, unless you get really lucky and your client always likes your initial idea.

No, too early to call.
I did it for fun.

Most people pick something they already know at university and then already know it all, or get depressed for failing. Seriously, what ever happened to being multi-capable?

When I was at school everyone said I was going to do Maths before I even got into six form, even me. Oh how life changes.

Tbh, I love my degree. I learn new shit every day that I enjoy and it's piss easy!

Btw Bardock, Film Production is applied Film studies is applied English is applied Language is applied Sociology. Or am I wrong and art doesn't count?

Oh, I have no trouble coming up with concepts it was just the way they didn't teach (or couldn't, with the size of the tutorial groups) the application of your own ideas, leaving the work we had to do very bland really. Dynamic posing, environmental art, character design all of which there was zero specialised modules for.

And, like I said we only had an hour a week with the comic professional, after that it was with tutors who were more 'fine art' focused and they sort of frowned on concept art, leaving us students sort of directionless. Most of us did our own thing anyway, but felt we needed more help than just 'look at this book', because we all have our flaws in some artistic area and no one-on-one help was really there to give us confidence or help increase our overall skill.

Yes, I went to college. I started off at a local community college where I learned to work on my academic ability and then transferred to the University of Virginia from which I graduated with a Bachelor's in English Language and Literature. happy

I went to college to learn about the world and come out a more well rounded, refined, sophisticated and educated a person. After spending years exploring the macromolecular world within our blood-pumping veins I switched to getting immersed in the vast and intense world of literature in the English language. it has been an unbelievably profound experience. college, to me isn't a factory that manufactures the future workers of america- i deliberately chose a course of study that emphasized the strengthening of the mind and of myself as an individual. Now with a college degree in hand, I am navigating the waters of the "real world" and figuring out what to make a career.

actually a general business degree or one in marketing and sales is quite unnecessary to pursue careers in them. unless of course you want to work your way into the executive team for which i'm pretty sure you'd need to get an MBA at some point. i have an English degree and i have had a fantastic sales and marketing job offers. that i have 6 months + internship experience is helpful though.

What's with all these Bachelor degrees? Get a Ph.D. or at the very least a Master's degree. And what about the fields? Art, marketing, hotel management?

I mean I understand why people study juridical- and medical programs to become an attorney or a physician. I don't agree with the mindset behind it---hence why I study physics---but I understand why people seek those professions.

But I will never for the life of me understand why someone would choose to study to get behind the desk at a hotel.

Yes, mostly because of my parents' expectations. If I had to do it again I would go to college instead.

I majored in history with a minor in classical studies. I graduated with an honours bachelor.

Like I said if I had to do it over, I'd have gone to college instead, which is what I will be doing in 2012, getting a degree in international trade management.

Having worked the last year since school, I realized that the only thing I really love is travel and hopefully my new degree will bring me ever closer to more of it.

I think you have a warped idea of what entails ''hotel management''. Good job at being an arrogant dick once again though.

Bardock42
I can somewhat understand his sentiment, but he's completely missed the point. Obviously the reason why people study art, marketing, hotel management is cause that's the most usual requirement to get hired and make money.

Now where I can somewhat follow (and that may be my Mathematical snobbishness talking) is that I think that a lot of these university courses aren't necessary in a non-artificial way, and are, perhaps in many cases, a less than ideal way to actually learn or get expertise in these subjects.

Nobody studies art to make money.

And yes, that was your mathematical snobbishness talking. But then again, I'm used to getting crap like that. Even when I was studying journalism people who were studying bullshit like literary sciences or medieval paleography would give me crap for studying something that directly led to a concrete profession.

People get a bachelor's degree to make money, sure art is a curious choice, but you'll still be better off with it than without it, and ultimately if you enjoy it on top of that advantage that's good, too.

Again, I'm not giving you crap, I think it makes great sense to study it. I'm saying that the system we have is set up for it to make great sense even though there may be better systems out there.

I didn't warp it, I generalized it. But be my guest and explain your choices. Surely at some point in your life you must have thought: "This sounds like a really good idea."

Not only does people who've studied; information technology, biotechnology, architecture, so on, make a lot of money---making the years of study an economical investment---but they also get work in an intellectually stimulating environment and do what they enjoy doing, and they can always apply to work with something different within their fields. Where can someone who've studied hotel management work if he wants to work with something else?

As I see it, people like you had this mindset while applying for university or college: "I'll get a degree so I can brag about how I've attended college, but I don't have the patience or will to study something challenging and productive."

While I---and people who decided to study something worthwhile---had this mindset: "I'll study this program because I love the field of study, and I love overcoming challenges and grow as a person, not only on an intellectual level, but also in terms of self-respect. I couldn't possibly live with thinking back and seeing myself taking the easy way out."

I'm just being honest. I really can't find any logical justifications for those choices, consequently I'll consider them irrational, and the ones making them stupid.
