Welcome Patti! Not having a car shouldn't be a problem if you're flexible. There are many groups that meet at various mass transit stops, and car pool from there. Besides checking and posting in the the Organize and Invite forum here, check the local groups: mazamas.org, trailsclub.org. onc.org, or even Portland Hiking Meet up has many outings. All of these will describe the different levels of hikes and how to be prepared for them. Have fun! : )
