Lol, I love how he starts with "W spent all our money on wars and not paying the debt" and went on by saying "Dem Republicans are stopping me from saving the countryz".

I think he has his re-election on his mind, but I like his democratic approach of harassing congressman.

I actually quite like this speech, considering the context of the nation and the world, but he's still a puppet with no real solutions except to meet the needs of his money masters.

Debt ceiling will be raised again, America is the land of living on credit, why should the government be any different. You max out all your credit cards, easy, get another and use that one to pay off minimum dues for the others. A happy circle.

IMO, they should raise the "if we go past this amount we're doomed" limit to a 'gazillion' USD and we won't have to do these scares anymore.

I don't expect much. He's a proven do-nothing pussy. I feel it's likely the GOP will go ahead with their plan on making the US default while making massive personal fortunes off of shorting the dollar during a financial collapse and will then use the ensuing chaos to impeach the president and strong arm the states into passing some fascist constitutional amendment.

What is this, the "three strikes" theory? He didn't do anything the last two times republicans rejected his plans. His current proposal is actually more conservative than a lot of the early republican plans.

There's some questions I want to ask.

Why isn't he raising the debt line, since it's already passed the peak or at the peak?

and, more importantly...Who is the government borrowing the money from? The Federal Reserve?

What to do now that we have no doubt that Republicans and the Tea Party are a cult and really are that stupid? If the debt ceiling isn't raised, the US treasury can avoid default AND missing any payments buy issuing two trillion dollar platinum coins (market value) and depositing them, the writing checks based on their value. That may still cause a downgrade in the US credit rating. At that point, if I were president I would identify every single congressman identifying with the Tea Party or shorting US treasury bonds and charge them with sedition and high treason. Maybe label them enemy combatants and let them cool down for a few months at Gitmo.

I think we need a means test for the presidency. Not necessarily based on ideology but one based on some measurement of character and preferably one that weeds out personality disorders. Other than corruption, I feel like the main factors that cripple and corrupt the American Presidency in a post-'60's world are fear for personal and familial safety. If you sit in the office, you should have no fear regardless of what you do because country comes first, your life and family are expendable when it comes to the well being of 300 million people. FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and even Johnson challenged the status quo but it seems like every liberal president and politician after watched the Zapruder film on a loop and decided to be friends with everyone. I guess this kind of ties in with my comment in the Norway thread that terrorism works as long as people act predictably and respond to their base, weaker instincts.

As I understand this, this deal is supposed to reduce the deficit by $2T in 10 years. Since we're, what--$14T in debt, this plan brings us out of debt in...70 years? 2081??

Actually, since the bill (for the moment) doesn't renew federal unemployment for 2012, does nothing for jobs, raises no additional revenue and will cost close to 2 million jobs in the next year, expect either the debt to grow or worse. The combination of no jobs, no social mobility, stagnant wages, broke cities, and only one person at homeland security assigned to domestic terrorism is going to make things interesting, and not in a good way.

The interest rate sounds serious calculated from the trillions of debt, but it's not usually even keeping up with inflation or economic growth. Crunch the numbers sometime - what would you make overtime investing in a well-diversified mutual fund vs. investing in the government? My strategy would be to make sure the government (a) draws its fair share from the economy (ie. don't let the upper class suck it all up AHEM) and (b) makes sure the economy doesn't go down the drain, which is exactly what people have been labeling as irresponsible lately.
