I didn't see a thread devoted to this yet. I just began delving into this series (up to issue 7 now) and I am loving it. I was just wondering if it gets better/worse/stays the same as the story goes on..?

Figured this could also double as the general Walking Dead discussion thread as well. smile

Galan007
The Walking Dead continues to be an exceptionally well done series. The plot consistently takes twists and turns that you never expected--some of which will shock the hell out of you (referring mostly to the happenings of 'The Prison' and 'The Governor' sub-plots, which ultimately transformed Rick into a borderline nutjob.)

Anywho, it is one of the best ongoing titles I have ever read, and certainly not your 'typical' zombie themed book. Highly recommended that you continue reading.

the ninjak
I stopped a while back just to have a rest.
But I recommend this series for everyone.

Much better than the TV show.

-K-M-
I was reading it and then stopped so I wouldnt get spoiled for the show. There are some differences already I noticed

-Pr-
I read it for the first 50 or so issues, then wished I hadn't so I wouldn't be spoiled for the show.

I enjoy both quite a bit though; i just hope we get Michionne in the show at some point.

Nataku8188
The comic is amazing, and the fact that the show barely follows it all means we get a divergent timeline... like Ultimate Walking Dead... or... something.

It's awesome. No complaining!

Eternal Idol
The comic was great up until the end of the Hunters arc, then it gradually started to lose me. I feel like Kirkman didn't plan the story out this far, and is just making characters flip out and plot against each other for the sake of creating tension. I don't care much for any of the characters anymore, with the exception of Andrea.

The art has been hit-and-miss with me since the artist switch early in the series.

Nataku8188
It never felt thought out for me, I always got the vibe that the next arc was whatever he dreamed up off the top of his head.

Galan007
Thought this was pretty interesting, and I couldn't think of anywhere else to post it...

Michonne's backstory:

StiltmanFTW
What issue is that from?

Galan007
Apparently it's from an issue of Playboy? I could only find that scene in .pdf format, so I had to DL it and had to convert it to .cbr from there--and I went through all that trouble just to post those scans here.... You're welcome. uhuh

...stick out tongue

Anyway, I'm always interested in seeing what these characters did in their daily lives before humanity effectively died... Especially a character as illusive/mysterious/badass as Michonne.

Galan007
Walking Dead #100 = the death of Glenn.

Kirkman is one of a select few writers who have absolutely NO reservations about killing main characters.

Scythe
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!

Negan (the guy who brutalized him) is a cruel phucker.

Scythe
Holy shit, ballz. That was awesome. Favorite character right there, and they do that.

It helps alot that I'm pretty new to the series and just catching up, so all the talks of staleness and boring plotline aren't very convicing to me.

Galan007
TWD is many things, but it has never been stale or boring. The plot constantly changes--sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

It is a great series, imo.

Scythe
I think so too, but another forum I frequently visit, I'll stop by and ask how's the story goin' and if anything groundbreaking has happened and I usually hear the usual hater responses:

"Kirkman's out of idea"

"Series needs to die, dropped it from my pull list"

"Bland, recycled and boring"

And I'm just like..... Wat.......

It's a story about surviving zombies, that'd happen in real life as well, find shelter, meet new people, fight others for supplies and so on.

Galan007
Yeah, I've heard the same crap too. Suffice to say, if the series were THAT boring, it would have never lasted 100 issues lol. The only thing I would like to see change, is the comic introduce Daryl (or a character like him.) I love his character in the show.

Says the dumbest guy on KMC. Out of curiosity, how many TWD comics have you actually read? Which arc?

TV series is quite good, but it doesn't hold a candle to comics. Season two was better than the first one, imo.

Darth Vicious
Issue 100 was rather brutal. I wonder how long before Rick gets his revenge and most importantly, how. Rick might have the upper hand since none of Negan's men seemed to have any guns. I liked Negans comment about Carl being a serial killer.

Galan007
Don't know how many people still follow TWD, but next month(issue #115) will spark the event: "All Out War"...

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=47867

Sounds excellent. Glad to know that Kirkman intentionally shifted the main focus away from the zombies, just so he could have them play a huge/more shocking part in this event. thumb up

Galan007
Negan is hands down the best villain yet.

Darth Vicious
Negan is an absolute ass. I like him. big grin Ezekiel is over the top but other than that its been pretty good. Hopefully this war is the end of the Negan arc.

StiltmanFTW
I still enjoy the book, but "King" Ezekiel with a tiger was a bit too much for me... wtf. Same with Negan wanting to bang his baseball bat.

Galan007
For anyone who is interested:

As part of its 10 year anniversary, issue #1 of TWD was re-released in color this past week. It is very cool to see the TWD-verse in color for the first time.

THE WALKING DEAD #157

STORY: ROBERT KIRKMAN

COVER: CHARLIE ADLARD & DAVE STEWART

AUGUST 3 | 32 PAGES | BLACK & WHITE | MATURE | $2.99

THE WHISPERER WAR PART 1
The time has come. The forces are aligning. The war has begun! Has Rick brought about the demise of everything he's built? Or will he triumph once again? Know this... there will be a cost.

______________________________________________

Tbh, I'll surprised if this arc doesn't bring about the death of Rick. He has ceased being an effective/trustworthy leader, and can no longer keep himself(let alone his people) in check. His decision to attack the Whisperers was a huge mistake from the beginning, and the 'plan' has gone to absolute shit ever since. Say what you will about the Whisperers, but they seem relatively benign when left unprovoked. Had Rick not brought conflict to them, his communities could have coexisted with the Whisperers just fine, imo.

...Though I suppose the real engineer behind this whole War is Negan. After all, he was originally responsible for planting the idea in Rick's head to begin with, lol. The dude is one hell of a tactician. thumb up

One_Angry_Scot
Covers generally don't hint at what happens in the comic but it makes me wonder what Rick is walking up to because of all of the others looking so scared.

Perhaps it is the Whisperer Horde? Or a skinned member of the group with one fo the Whisperers wearing their skin.

Don Draper
Has it ever been revealed what the people in twd did before the outbreak? i know negan was a coach and rick was a sheriff, but has anyone elses professions been mentioned?

krisblaze
Michonne was a lawyer.

Maggie was on that farm.

Carl was a kid.

Galan007
Rick/Shane - police officers
Negan - grade school PE teacher
Michonne - lawyer
Gabriel - preacher
Eugene - high school science teacher
Glenn - pizza delivery boy
The Governor - some sort of undisclosed office job
Douglas Monroe - Ohio congressman
Ezekiel - zookeeper
Alexander Davidson - security liaison at the white house
Tyreese - retired NFL linebacker
Abraham/Dwight - soldiers in US army
Andrea - clerk at a law firm
Dale - retired car salesman
Hershel - veterinarian
Denise/Pete/Carson - doctors

...That's all I can think of at the moment.

Don Draper
Thanks! are all of them still alive in the comics?

Also, what is your favorite arc? where is a good place to start?

Also, what is your favorite arc? where is a good place to start? My favorite part of the series thus far is definitely the arc entitled "A New Beginning"(issues #127-144ish.) At the start of issue #127, there has been a 2 year time-lapse between issue #126(the conclusion of "All Out War".) It is just amazing to see how far the communities have come in that time. Those issues also introduce The Whisperers, and set the tone for "The Whisperer War" that is taking place right now.

A good starting point is issue #1. Only by reading the series from start-current, and seeing all of the events that have led up to this point, will you be able to understand the true depth of the series as a whole.

Thanks guys! i think i'm gonna start reading this.

One last question for today lol; i've seen people post jesus's feats. where in the hell did he learn his ma skills? has his back-story been brought up at all in the books?

StiltmanFTW
Nope, not yet. Lots of questions unanswered.

From wikia:

Source: http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Paul_Monroe_(Comic_Series)

Letter Hacks = letter column.

Galan007
^ I've seen that on the Wiki as well, but was never able to find the issue it was supposedly stated in. But even if it was stated, it just seems like a play on the Jesus/God dynamic -- ie. Jesus' 'father'(God) taught him his mad skills. I could totally see Kirkman trolling us like that.

OR it's possible that his origin/backstory could change. I mean, in the Letter Hacks from issue #143, Kirkman stated that Negan was a used car salesman before the outbreak:

http://i.imgur.com/yPnYBvx.jpg

...But as we now know, he was canonically a PE teacher.

Hell, Kirkman has even stated in the Hacks section that he lies to fans all the time, lol.

As for expanding on Jesus' origin, Kirkman teased it in the Letter Hacks section of issue #135:

http://i.imgur.com/X8VCDlA.jpg

He actually followed through with the above teaser by giving us Negan's backstory -- so once that has wrapped up, hopefully we'll get a "Here's Jesus" backstory as well. droolio

Speaking of Letter Hacks:

I realize he's a valuable asset, but the urge to see him gone is too strong.

Covers tend to be misleading so often, your scenario of Euge saving the day is more likely, though.

Galan007
Yeah, I think the Stephanie/Ohio thing was introduced as a 'Chekhov's Gun' of sorts. It will play a major role in *some* fashion before all is said and done, imo. Perhaps Eugene will call them in to save the day... But another likely scenario is: The Whisperers will win -- or they'll at least destroy the colonies during this war(Hilltop already looks f*cked, tbh.) In the aftermath, Eugene will tell the survivors of the Ohio community, and they'll ultimately travel there for sanctuary.

I'd actually prefer the latter plot, tbh. Lots of potential... Though it would be a real shame to see everything the communities have done get washed down the drain.

*If Eugene is killed, that'd honestly set the groups back by yearS. They owe most of their technological/strategical accomplishments solely to him. Eugene is the Reed Richards of TWD. thumb up

StiltmanFTW
Yeah... I'd love to see Rick & Co. back on the road again.

Anyway,
That is what I thought would happen -- the Whisperers winning just seemed inevitable(I mentioned this above.) While I am excited to see where the plot goes from here, it also REALLY sucks to lose the key communities... They had come SO far. Now it's just a matter of finding out who dies when this event reaches its crescendo. Kirkman has already promised multiple major character deaths.

Damn you read that quick. Just like me. Once I started I couldn't stop. I think the B&W art goes really well. There is a coloured issue out there I think but it just doesn't feel right.

Hopefully we can soon find out about Beta and his face (as in why he doesn't want anyone to see it). It seems like he must have had the mask for such a long time for it to be that dark. No idea what he could be hiding. A dick shaped birthmark perhaps...

Thanks to my local library I have just binged on the series from the start right up to where they have met the Whisperers, and then right at the end heads have been discovered on spikes.

You guys were right, this series was just fantastic. The art is awesome.

I actually like how the TV series has stuck to the source material up to a point, but it has added other things and left stuff out/changed stuff without diminishing it at all. The comic just gives the characters a lot more depth. So many of them seem so different to me now after reading them. I have a lot more respect for Carl. Eugene is almost unrecognizable. Maggie is amazing. Michonne has so many layers. Brilliant.

I did wonder, after reading, what the point of some of the TV show's inclusions were. Those guys with the w's carved into their foreheads? They were a bit of a plot dead end, they just never would have worked in the comic.

And what about the decision around Andrea? That must have been a HUGE meeting in the script-writer's room? She is just such a massive, massive character in the comic.

Anyway, that's all I had to say. Mainly just wanted to thank you guys , especially Galan, who have consistently blown the trumpet for TWD comic, and which is why I decided to give it a real go. Definitely worth it.

Cheers

Galan007
Yeah, I think they had an easier time killing-off TV Andrea because they always had Michonne in mind for Rick's love interest. Aside from that, TV Andrea was also quite a bit older than comic Andrea, but that would have been a relatively small issue had they decided to go that route.

Anyway, glad to hear that you have enjoyed the series. I still can't recommend it enough. thumb up

wuleecat
Yeah thanks again man. I am actually excited to track down the next parts of the story as I know I have a bit of catching up still to do from bits and pieces you've posted on here.

That whole Whisperers thing was like a gigantic gut-punch. Kirkman spent ages setting up the 'look-how-our-community-is-finally-back-from-the-brink' feel, with country fairs and smiling kids running around. It just made it more nightmarish when those freaks appeared. They are genuinely the scariest thing in the comics so far. I know Negan goes up against them, but I am a bit vague on the details. Now THAT I can't wait to see.

Galan007

And judging by the cover/solicit for #173, Jesus might be running into some serious trouble as well...

It's not often that we see HIM bloodied up... Really hope Kirks doesn't kill him off... ermm

This cover REALLY has me scratching my head...

...Wonder if these guys are part of Stephanie's Ohio-faction..? They're armed as f*ck -- tech WAY beyond anything else we've seen in TWD-verse thus far.

I've been unable to read any TWD comics since about Andrea died due to various things including shit internet.

Would someone perhaps be able to fill me in on what has transpired since then please.

Impediment
The latest issue focuses on Negan who had a pretty intense interaction with Maggie.

Maybe Negan will actually turn over a new leaf? I dunno. Negan is still as slippery as squirrel shit to me.

Good issue this month.

Issue #176...

https://s18.postimg.org/ehkvp3t15/Issue176.jpg

If covers are any indicator, this new faction(aka. "The Commonwealth"wink is ridiculously stacked. Very interesting. thumb up

Galan007
Well, 'The Commonwealth' has a population of nearly 50,000 people. The community is SO large, in fact, that it has its own football, basketball, baseball, and soccer leagues... and also hosts rock concerts, lol:
https://s7d2.turboimg.net/t1/37060208_The_Walking_Dead_175-016.jpg https://s7d2.turboimg.net/t1/37060210_The_Walking_Dead_175-017.jpg

Aside from that, issue #175 revealed that Michonne's daughter is alive, and evidently lives/works in The Commonwealth.

I expected an advanced community. I didn't expect anything like this, though. blink

The new issue of TWD this month is WTFOMG!!!!!

StiltmanFTW
That stormtrooper armor seems pretty uber.

Dude just nonchalantly went into a herd, whereas Governor's corpse was getting torn apart, despite the prison suit.

StiltmanFTW
Then again, Jerome appeared to be pissing his pants when he got knocked down...

StiltmanFTW
Dwight disappointing Rick yet again... laughing out loud

Galan007
I liked Dwight for a while, but he's just annoying now. He needs a good Ricking.

StiltmanFTW
thumb up

He became painfully predictable.

StiltmanFTW
World War Mercer next issue? big grin

Galan007
Seems like most of the Commonwealth's military has Mercer's back. He's pretty damn respected, so I could easily see him taking control of the community by force and appointing a new leader.

StiltmanFTW
thumb up

Can't wait for some action.

Lance is gonna get his ass kicked.

StiltmanFTW
Well, I was wrong.

#188 cliffhanger made me lol laughing out loud

Galan007
How long until Eugene starts phucking Stephanie, and they crank out a mulatto baybay iyo?

StiltmanFTW
Soon... assuming Stephanie survives the herd laughing out loud

Galan007
Hope she doesn't make it(terrible character, imo), but I'm sure she will.

....mmm

StiltmanFTW
Never trust a governor, lol.

Pam's going to get her ass kicked. Assuming her troops won't turn against her.

Galan007
Yeah, I'm curious to see how that fleshes out, because most of the troops seem extremely loyal to Mercer, and Mercer is fangirling over Rick right now...

StiltmanFTW
Exactly.

Everything is happening too fast for my taste, but at least it doesn't get boring this way.

Could the gunshots attract the herd/swarm back to Commonwealth at this point, assuming the battle does happen? They should still be within range, no?

StiltmanFTW

Kirkman's cliffhangers are always epic, lol.

Galan007
Rick should pack his gunshot wound with Walker blood to give his heart infinite stamina. thumb up

StiltmanFTW
You think there's a chance Rick could die from that gunshot?

Galan007
If he doesn't die, then the Commonwealth must have some damn good surgeons, because that gunshot wound looks like it's right over his heart:

But Carl's wound looked fatal at first, too.

Grimes have good healing factors.

StiltmanFTW
sad

Negan needs to come back and teach Sebastian new kinds of pain.

Galan007
All hope lies in Negan.

Impediment

Galan007
Thought that's where Kirkman might be going when he ended the Letter Hacks section of the recent issue with this:

https://i.imgur.com/YXeNq3Y.jpg

While Negan is probably my favorite character in the comics(his story/backstory was executed perfectly, imo), I am not at all interested in seeing a 'reformed' Negan step in and fill Rick's shoes or w/e. When Negan enters the fray again, he needs to still be Negan or it'll be a complete slap in the face.

StiltmanFTW
And here I thought it'd be natural to focus on Carl as Rick's successor.

Galan007
Love Carl's character-building over the years, but he just doesn't have the same following as Negan, and has had precious few solo arcs in the comics.

If they're looking to sell issues, Negan is definitely the better move.

StiltmanFTW
Sure. But redeemed Negan will feel weird, unless Kirkman has thought about it a great deal and knows what he's doing.

Galan007
If he tries to transform Negan into Rick v2.0, I'll legit be done with the series.

StiltmanFTW
One thing for sure ---

Negan * did * undergo a change of some sort. We can only hope it won't be as bad as Pre-Crisis and Post-Crisis Mindset. That guy is a shadow of his former self.

Galan007
I hope Rick's prosthetic arm becomes Negan's new bat. thumb up

StiltmanFTW
Most important thing for me is to see Sebastian suffer.

And when I say "suffer" I mean Michonne vs. Governor type of suffering, if not worse.

Galan007
YES! thumb up

And either Carl or Negan need to be the one who delivers justice.

StiltmanFTW
Ideally, Negan.

Though I wouldn't mind Carl doing that. But it'd either require 1) him cracking and going batshit crazy (which theoretically might happen, remember the cliffhanger?) 2) Sebastian escaping from his prison, Carl warned him what would happen then.

After the prison arc, I got the impression that Kirkman hadn't thought the story through that far. To me, it felt like he'd told the story he wanted to tell, but it became so popular that he just kept writing more without a spectacular ending in mind. I had lost interest just before Negan bashed Glenn's head in. I expected him to end the story soon after he became either too busy or bored with it, or the comic's popularity died down.

Impediment
I feel that the finale was rushed and cheap.

StiltmanFTW
Yeah... giant-size or not... it was exactly what you said.

Galan007
I have mixed feelings about it.

On one hand I would have liked more setup to the finale. On the other hand I'm glad that Kirkman didn't milk this series into oblivion... Like he did with Invincible, Kirkman quit while he was ahead.

I actually liked the finale issue itself for the most part, though.

StiltmanFTW
I don't like how it was ignored that roamers would still be "easily accessible", even in that far more civilized "rebirth of humanity" time... I mean, regardless of what caused your death, you're still turning into one of them...

So no reason for Glenn Junior to get so crazy about them, imho.

"P.S. Negan lives"

Kirkman can go f*ck himself. laughing out loud

He had no idea where to take the story, so he ended it in the laziest way possible, and then he teases a potential mini-series for the title's most popular character.

StiltmanFTW
I'm still pissed he ended it like that...

Missing this book.
