How would you re envision "lame" comic characters to make them cooler

make them another characters side-kick
their powers & name must be kept exactly the same
you can however make them a master martial artist or expert gunman.
I personally would like a more militarized Toad.
to give him more discipline so to remove any goofy-ness
.and the chance to utilise guns. and a dark sense or humor
