From the opening credits to the end of the film some shots have been reframed for all three films and new ones inserted .

I dont want to see star wars again (97) i just want to see the 77-83 prints but he wants us to forget about these prints forever .

Then I guess you should find something else to be passionate about.

Or are you one of those fans who hates Star Wars and the changes but will continue to talk about and buy related items?

JediRobin23
Special edition wasn't as bad. Changes in the Bluray edition, destroyed it

Q99
Even the SE messes with the pacing some, though.

I will not buy them ever again ever !!

Oh Come on! I can understand why people complain about some of the changes like making Greedo shoot first, adding Hayden Christianson to ROTJ & adding a NOOOOOO into ROTJ, but I think a lot of the other changes did improve the film. The newer versions have much beter quality & couloring. It looks really good & crisb now, & all these added speciel effects., How do they ruin it? I don't even mind the added CGI characters. George was limmited with what he could do bck in the late 70's early 80's, so now he can do more, he might as well improve the films. I think the new emperor scene works so much better tha the original emperor! I'm glad that change was made! And what is the big deal with ewocks blinking? It makes them more realistic! You only hate a lot of these changes, because there not what you saw in star wars in the first place. But they make the originals more consistant with the prequels.

I won't deny that I did perfer the original scene.

What bugs me more is GL changing or editing some things and not others that are more obvious! Like the hand puppet of the Wampa the first time we see it. Or some of the colors of the lightsabers in all 3, especially luke on the falcon. And on bespin

I denanitly agree swith you on the lightsabers! I really don't understand why they haven't been improved! That's possibly more important than any of the other changes, but yet that's the one which never gets fixed any of the speciel editons.

Yes, really. I don't mind very many aspects of the reframing/recompositing done on the movies.

What I am very much less likely to like would be actual changes of substance: The Emperor's scream used in the 1997 ESB; the blinking ewoks in the Blu-Ray ROTJ; the stupid added rock (which disappears in the next shot) in the Blu-Ray ANH...etc.

Yeah who cares about the changes? if you dont like them you can always go back and watch the original versions. Yeah I loved the changes MADE IN THE SPECIAL EDITIONS especially in Empire when you get to see more of the city seeing them pass through cloud city when they are being escorted.Plus it was hysterical in new hope watching Ford walk over Jabbas tail. laughing Hearing what they did with them in blu ray though I think I will skip those.

Lucas doesnt understand his own creation. The films themselves remain timeless and great movies that have moments that are in our collective memories.
I like the fact that Lucas enhanced the colour of the originals, but the content of the films didn't need to be tampered with.
The 3 bits that annoy me 1) The changed dialogue in the Emperor's scene in Empire Strikes Back. Not needed, and didn't make sense.

2) Changing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ: disrespectful to the late sebastian Shaw, Luke never saw the young Anakin Skywalker, and Hayden Christensen sucked in the prequels

3) And the most obvious one that all true star wars fans hate: You guessed! always remember everyone HAN SHOT FIRST!!
George Lucas saying "Oh it shows Han as a cold blooded killer that he's not" NO! IT DOES NOT, GEORGE!
It shows Lucas' inability to understand cinema and story telling anymore. That scene is important as it shows Han as a self reliant smuggler who takes no shit from people. Greedo had him at gun point and was taunting him n was boring Han, when I was 5 and saw this for the first time I didn't think Han was a coldblooded killer at all in this scene.
It is important for his redemption at the end when he helps Luke destroy the Death Star. Every Star Wars fan saw that and felt the power of Han redeeming himself. The scene having Greedo shoot first weakens the redemption a bit. George Lucas was the only person in the world who didn't understand that

queeq
Wow, coolmovies, too much time on your hands?

And I agree: Han shot first! wink

JediRobin23
wow. guess star wars got retarded with the blue ray anyway. EP 7 seems ok now

Maybe he should intercut that scene with an interview with Vader to explain what he was feeling and thinking at the time. It would make that scene so much clearer. And then maybe a voice over by Morgan Freeman, so we all get it.

I have no problems with CGI changes in principle, because the OT isn't for me some holy work that can't be altered. But I don't like the Ewoks period, blinking or not. They're silly teddy bears in a supposedly sci-fi film and are absolutely ridiculous imo. They should all be lured into a pit and burnt.

queeq
Agreed.

I would like a good HD version of the original theatrical release of the movies though. After all, those movies are the ones that made history, not the CGI-ed ones.

Not an Ewok fan either, but they were hardly Teddy bears.
They were looking to cook and eat Luke and Han and Leia.
They probably feasted on dead Storm trooper after the big battle.

Yes he destroyed them.... NOTHING IS PURE IN THE WORLD NOW!!

The only star wars that exists to me ARE THE ORIGINAL 3 MOVIES (Nothing digital .. The analog masters))

I have part 1 and 3 on VHS in thier analog masters.... I cant find 2 and thats all I want to complete my collection!!

I DO NOT EVER WANNA SEE THE GARBAGE HE CHANGED THEM TO -- COMPLETE DIGITAL TRASH!!!!!!!

I am a TRUE star wars fan!!!!!

quanchi112
Star Wars is in better hands than it's ever been. Disney will make it greater. Trust me. The new trilogy's villains are utterly fantastic and superior to the previous original trilogy villains.

Flyattractor
I can understand this guys point. I have had several of the things I was a fan of growing up pretty much taken away from me and warped in hideous ways to make it appeal to others.

queeq
If one can call it appealing. At least... will it be appealing on the long run like the OT was?

Flyattractor
I am sure Disney don't care. They are making their money back plus several billion more.

Dude111
Your right they dont care.... THEY HAVE GARBAGE IN THIER HANDS and they think its gold!!!

I can recommend the Despecialized Editions.

cdtm
Done from different sources.

The Silver Screen Edition looks promising, it's a cleanup from the negatives (Didn't Lucas claim they were all destroyed?)

Found a comparison:

SS on the left.

cdtm
My god, these are way too much trouble to get.

Refuse to use torrents for anything, Mega links are all too big and have download caps, and Reddt links are all non clearly marked or have problems.

Nobody knows how to do a proper upload anymore. Either that, or everyones using bait and switch tactics to trick people into clicking/upgrading an account.

cdtm
Finally, finally managed to see episode iv.

Worth the wait. The spliced in footage is visably of a lesser quality then the blu-ray stuff, but Harmy does a good job of blending it in as well he can. I understand the 2.7 version used Silver Screen Edition title crawlers and some other things.

I think I'll try and see the SSE next. I understand it took them over three years clean and touch up the 35mm film they aquired.

queeq
Yup. A labour of love.

Although I've always been more of a casual fan anyway, and it was only more recently with the ubiquity of commercialized Star Wars shit that I've become disgusted by the whole spectacle. That and Force Awakens rehashed the damn Death Star to a nauseating degree and Rogue One was boring fan service...

It doesn't have "A new hope" on it, so we're talking as old school a cut as you can get.

I think I prefer the SSE edition to Harmy's. The grain and little flaws makes it feel more authentic, like how they saw it back in the theater. And seeing those low res sources in the middle of blu-ray scenes somewhat broke the immersion for me.

Where could they have gotten the 35 mm cut, though? Someone at Fox who knew it would never happen officially? Someone who worked on the original project year ago, and happened to have a cut sitting around collecting dust?

cdtm
So imo Silver Screen Edition > Harmy edition.

It's has a more consistent look, and there's something more legitimate about a 35 milimeter restoration then a splicing together of sources that includes Blue Rays.

One method seems more like stealing, while the other simply restores a neglected original. Even if the result seems the same, it's a difference between the mission of M.A.M.E and merely ripping a modern game..

"Hate" is perhaps a strong word, since I never felt particularly passionate about it in any way previously, but I'm perhaps more indifferent towards it now because I just expect the story and writing to suck huge balls.

I grew up with the Special Editions (born in 92 so... yeah)

The DVD or Blu Ray versions were what annoyed me. Just shoehorn Haydn Christiansen into a film about redemption because that's when he was a good guy (wait he wasn't, he was good when he threw the empire down a pit and Luke spoke to him then and remembered him then... **** it)

But now check this out: to2SMng4u1k

It's almost like watching the Star Wars sequels. I feel dead inside.

Lord Lucien
That little video is a technical achievement for amateur filmmakers, but goddamn does it just miss the f*cking point.

Blakemore
Obi wan was too old to defeat Vader, but did it until he saw Luke watching and knew that his death would give Luke strength. He turns off his lightsaber and accepts his death because the force would go into Luke. Even a little kid like me could see that.

What's even funnier is that there was never a moment like that in the prequels proving that Lucas didn't get the point of that scene either.

Blakemore
It also ties in with the fight in RotJ where Luke doesn't kill Vader because only a sith would do that.

YAYIMAGOD2323
imo disney shouldve kept the legends/EU universe and expanded upon it, but I guess it wouldve interrupted the new canon theyre setting up

Blakemore
When I was a kid, looking at the poster of RotJ, I thought it meant Luke becomes a Jedi by defeating Darth Vader. When in fact, Darth Vader returns as a Jedi and saves his son from the evil emperor, sacrificing himself.

Lucas must've been told this idea and thought it would make a good film, as long as he could put ewoks in it so we don't have to pay attention to the love story between Han and Leia, which he obviously missed.

roughrider

If they respected all the books of the EU as canon, they could be no surprises going forward for movie audiences. And you couldn't do movies dedicated to the novels set 5-10 years after ROTJ because you would have to de-age the actors so much for the entire film length. I basically went along with them reclassifying the canon novels as Legends, and now they are slowly working that material into the new movies and TV shows in new ways to surprise us.
