only problem i think with it at the moment is it will bomb at the box, Its suppose to come out September but there's no trailer as of yet.

From what I have seen it looks rather low budget. Will probably do best in the Uk and possibly Europe, but the rest of the world will be a flop...The Stallone movie will leave to bad of a taste in the memory of the general public.

At best the movie gains a small cult following.

I know that they've shown it at that Cannes film festivel and the reaction was great

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=59933

but yeah....no doubt it will flop with the American release.

roughrider
It was shot in South Africa with many of the same personnel who worked on District 9 - that was a $30 million dollar film that looked 3-4 times more expensive. So I don't think the conservative budget will be a big stumbling block. They also shot it in 3D.

BruceSkywalker
this looks much better than stallone's version..

with a cheap budget this should certainly turn a profit and perhaps spawn a few sequels

You mean, what isn't under pressure to convert to 3D these days? It's a significant decision to make to actually shoot in 3D, even though conversions are getting better every time out. Michael Bay had to reprogram his mind to shoot the way he wants with a 3D camera.

Some purists consider true 3D to only be the films shot with a 3D camera.

Man, Urban seriously looks scrawny for the role.

Funny it was a joke that Stallone kept his helmet off for most of the movie....now it looks like it's the same with Urban keeping his on.

I think Urban's a good actor but not for Dredd.

loved the original but not sure on if they should have done this over again??

He is Dredd

they're basing him more on the early designs

as drawn by the creator himself

I understand basing the costume on early designs...

I'm just saying the costume & helmet looks two sizes too big for Urban.

This is one case where you can't take the character seriously becos you can't see his eyes...you can't tell whether he believes in the cheesey one-liners he says...

Gah, they've got the style all wrong again! As soon as the trailer did the 'Judge, jury... and executioner' tag I knew they'd cocked it up.

I know a film needs changes, but just making it straight action cuts the heart out of what Dredd is. Watchmen was done with respect to style; so could Dredd be.

The release dates are so close, it's likely just a coincidence that the central plots are similar. Dredd fans on IMDB are convinced, however, the makers of TR:R purposely tried to push their film into theaters first to upstage Dredd, which got shot before TR:R in late 2010.

Patient_Leech
Yeah, watching the trailer again, this really doesn't look any better than the Stallone version. That version is actually pretty entertaining, in a campy, over-the-top sort of way. The production value and just look of it is pretty entertaining.

IGN's review.

I gotta say I'm surprised it got a decent review, I thought it was going to suck like the last one.

Ushgarak

Yes, the original is a darkly comic satire- above everything else, Dredd was funny and absurd. A society where sugar is banned as an addictive substance and where an epidemic crime wave was about people immersing themselves in a rubbery-substance and 'boinging' themselves off of high buildings, bouncing around for fun... Where they did micro-stories of the like where Dredd goes on patrol and cannot find a single person- perp or victim- who is not wanted for a crime, or when he visits a youth rehabilitation centre which is notable because it has reduced a 99% recidivsm rate to 97%.. Where sentient apes form a major criminal underclass. It was a wild science storyline that was happy with alternate dimensions, time travel and magic. A setting where Ireland has been turned into a giant theme park (in stories written by Garth Ennis, no less). It was NOT just a near future grim dark cop story. It was a continued comment on power, justice, politics and community, all wrapped in absurdly violent and wild storylines.

That's where they miss the style. As for the details...

There's also no death sentence in the original!!!

As soon as they start saying '... and executioner' or lines like 'the sentence is death' (which is the evil alternate dimensional entity Judge Death's line!) in the films, they've lost it. Sure, the Judges kill like crazy in combat (and life is laughably cheap in the whole thing) but that's only in self-defence. There is no crime with capital punishment and their objective is always to take perps alive.

Robtard
"To escape, Dredd must journey from floor number 1 to floor number 200, and arrest Ma-Ma in the process." -snip

Has a The Raid: Redemption sound to it.

Ushgarak
Very much so.

I don't mind the visual changes that some fans are not happy with. Things that look good in comics can look pretty bad on screen.

What do you think of the costumes?

i know its been brought up elsewhere and yeah they seem to be using the creators's original design for Dredd.

Ushgarak
They all look fine. The cityscape is far less built up than the comics, but that's ok too.

That was the first thing I noticed in the preview: the scant cityscape visual presentation. I assume they took care of that by having a really really "tall" underground.

I saw it last night.

Simply put - honour has been restored to Judge Dredd.

It's an honest, grimly satisfying thriller; it's style evokes early John Carpenter in it's relentlessness. It exists to satisfy it's hardcore faithful fans, and as a rebuke (OK, as a kick in the jewels) against everything wrong with the Stallone version.

Kazenji
Hope it makes alot of money at the Box office's around the world for the sequels, Would like to see the Dark Judges in a movie.

My big question is (cuz I'm a little short on dough for the moment): Is it worth seeing on the big screen in 3D? I kind of suspected all that slow motion stuff would look really good in 3D... so is it worth the $15 to see it in 3D or would waiting for blu-ray be sufficient?

roughrider
It was actually lensed in 3D. People should go to the theatre, to demonstrate Dredd has an audience.

Tzeentch._
Aye, I just got back a few hours.

I was one of seven people in the theater. Seven, people. At 8pm on a Saturday night.

A real shame- my opinion of the movie is mixed, but I would be interested in seeing a sequel at least. It sucks that the Katy Perry movie probably got a bigger audience.

Patient_Leech
Fair enough. I'll try to get out and see it in the coming week or two, cuz it apparently isn't going to last long...

The film's marketing was garbage. If it weren't for SSH, I wouldn't have known it existed until a week ago. No posters, one or two trailers, that's about it. This deserves a LOT more money. I want some sequels.

Myth
Saw it this weekend in a mostly empty theater right in a popular area in Orange County. I really liked the movie. Sad that we likely won't get a sequel because of shitty marketing.

Kazenji
Isn't the production company an English one?.........so it is possible for a sequel and i'm guessing it is doing better over there then America.

Tzeentch._
According to Wiki, the maker of the movie said that a sequel would be possible if the movie manages to make at least 50mill during its run in theaters.

That possibility is seeming pretty distant. The film only made 6 million in its opening weekend. Interest in the movie isn't going to increase much past its opening few days unless word of mouth gets around that it's a good movie and people who wouldn't normally have gone to see it are intrigued into giving it a chance.

Looks like this might be along the lines of Equilibrium: enjoyable but not marketed for crap. Why is it that movies with homeboy from Doom never get good marketing?

Tzeentch._
From what I understand, the producers were pretty confident that the film was going to bomb. So I imagine they felt that cheaping out on marketing and such would cut their losses.

It's a self-fulfilling prophesy of course- if they had spent more money to get some good starpower in the film and better marketing it probably would be doing better in the box office -but that's movie producers for you.

There were some things (though far in between) I felt the Stallone Dredd did right at least, though I might just be saying that because it was a guilty pleasure of mine.

Anyhow, got back from finally seeing this. Like Blax, I had seven or so people total in the theater room unsurprisingly. Hell, I don't think my theater even plays the 3D version of the movie anymore, so I saw it in regular. Shame since it had some parts that the 3D would've really complemented unlike most other "3D" films. Seeing this also kinda made me realize how great or better Stallone's Dredd could've been if it had been half as violent or bloody... lol Should have since it was R-rated too. Most of all though, always having the helmet on gave Dredd the justice and badassery he deserved. This has much more room open for a sequel than Stallone's Dredd as well, which I guess may not won't happen due to what's been said about the marketing...
