It amazes me that Bing Crosby is remembered only for his recording of "White Christmas." Crosby was a show business giant, selling half a billion records. America was closer to being one people in 1942 (population 134,860,000) than they are presently (population 311,600,000). Yet, the world had entered into a war that would claim 40 or 50 or 60 million lives according to whom you believe. Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is a momentary vision. It is in transit. Certainly snow can cause driving hazards and automobile crashes. Christmas cards get thrown away, and Christmas trees are messy coming down. Christmas as nostalgia is usually better than current reality, and there is no doubt that the Christmas songs of classic America are the best.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white
