Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler.

Oskar Schindler is a man with a plan.

With the start of the Second World War, he arrives in Poland to take advantage of the war, becoming a war profiteer. A Sudenten German (from the German-speaking of Sudetenland in what was Czechslovakia) and member of the Nazi Party, he is not motivated by racial ideology. He is motivated simply by cash. So after rubbing elbows with the SS elite who are in charge, he opens up an enamelware factory with their backing.

So it starts. As the war continues, he has a change of heart following witnessing the liquidation of the Krakow Ghetto (Operation Reinhard) under the orders of SS-Lieutenant Amon Goeth. Schindler begins to use his massive wealth to save the Jewish workers under his care from the horrors of the Nazi Party's Final Solution. Despite his later failures in his marriage and several businesses following the war, he was recognized as Righteous Among The Nations by the State of Israel for saving the lives of over 1,200 European Jews.

He once told his wife that people will remember his name once the war was over. In a way, he was right.

For that, we recognize Oskar Schindler.

Trivia: Liam Neeson was not Steven Spielberg's first choice to play as Schindler. Swiss actor Bruno Ganz was the first choice. Ganz refused. Years later, he would play Adolf Hitler in Downfall.

Roman Polanski was offered the director's chair. He refused, as he himself was a Holocaust survivor who lived in the Krakow Ghetto. He would later direct The Pianist. Martin Scorsese was also offered the chair. He too refused, stating that a Jewish director would be better for the task.
