I prefer the long beams to his pew pew blob phasers. In DS9 you had the best of both worlds anyway.
I realize that for all intents and purposes, blob phasers are closer to realistic in space.
But to be sure, if he wanted realism he should go further.
I thought the andromeda TV series did energy weapons fire correctly at times, since when Dylan fired his boom stick you just saw the muzzle flash and the impact.
The blob moved too fast to be seen with the naked eye, but you did see the effects of the blast where it hit, plus the muzzle flash.
If Abrams doesn't wanna go that realistic, I would have preferred him keep the phaser beams. They are tradition, and trek in the end, is about tradition.
