Because Mangog's power rivaled Odin's. He was just that powerful. There were statements saying that Mangog is even more powerful than Odin, like in Thor #155:

And it may be true given that Mangog actually overpowered Odin easily later on in Thor #196, along with the fact that Mangog was introduced as being more powerful than Ego, who -- under the same writer, Stan Lee -- was stated to be able to destroy universes on a whim back in Thor #133. Well, this may seem like a hyperbole if we take into consideration Ego's later performances, but Stan Lee sure did regard him as being extremely powerful back in the day (he was the one who created him, after all), considering he gave Galactus a fight later on in Thor #160/161.

Still though, Odin has shown to be able to banish him, or cut him from his power source; and that counts as a win on a battle forum.
