Anyone heard about ASMR? Stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. Fancy name for brain tingles. Like peeling the plastic coating off of electronics, a great massage, or just someone speaking to you in a soothing voice.

I don't know if it's an actual medical thing, or if it's just something the internet came up with. In any case, there are entire Youtube channels devoted to it. Relaxing as all hell, though.

I knew about the phenomenon for years, but never knew it had a name (or an internet following) until about an hour ago. It can be great to relax and enjoy, though.

Here's one of the better channels I've found for it, which admittedly is all of about 15 minutes of browsing various links:

Tell it to me straight, Digi:

If I click on your video, will I wake up 3 years from now to find out I'm a member of a cult, chanting "Hare Krishna", penniless,
and wondering why I'm wearing a sari?

Lol, doubtful. Though I just watched a 17-minute full-screen HD video of that girl painting my face, and another consisting entirely of a dude whispering in French...so something weird may be going on.

Tzeentch
lol!

Yah, I know the feeling that they're referring to with this stuff. I noticed when I was little that the sound of people speaking very softly calms me down and gives me that shivery feeling (part of why I used to have trouble staying awake in church).

Watching the "Pendant and Soft Spoken Answers" video that's apart of the channel you linked. Very relaxing.

A lot of the triggers they talk about do absolutely nothing for me. But some are quite nice.

Also, this is the strangest thing I have seen on the internet that didn't end with "And then the cops showed up". Ilse is also nerdy cute, and with some proper dental work could be super hot if entirely bizarre and unaccountable. Or I'm just really really susceptible to whispering foreign girls at 3 am, take your pick.

Bardock42
My girlfriend has this, and we often try to cause the feeling in her. She has also been watching youtube videos that trigger it for her. And yeah, there are very interesting communities online that work to trigger this in particular ways (soft whispering, doing repeated menial tasks). I personally have not got this sensation though, it sounds pleasant.

Mindship
ASMR is a form of attention training, subtlely targeting the inner dialogue. Has anyone here read Carlos Castenada's Don Juan series? If you find ASMR interesting, one should read it. It's chock full of menial tasks and weird, tingly feelings.

I suppose it helps that she's cute, but that's secondary to me. My favorite video so far didn't even include her face. So there's no real sexual connection; just relaxation and tingles.

This is a judgement-free zone Tzeentch. I'm actually surprised the KMC crowd has been so receptive so far.

I don't need it to sleep, though, but a lot of people apparently use it as a sleep aid.

Thank you for sharing, Digi. I will view the videos after this episode of Battlestar Galactica.

It may seem weird but I can get this feeling or "state" but just thinking about stuff but it only works sometimes and I have not figured out the variables to recreate it consistently. One of my friends, who is Buddhist, said that this state can be obtained with meditation.

Bonus: I get this feeling, sometimes, when watching this Norwegian dude blacksmithing (smithing). His voice is calm, he's highly intelligent, and his hands are sure. He creates real swords, pommels, knives, etc. But the combination of all those things makes his videos bring on the tingles.

Interestingly enough, the whispering causes tingling when I first hear it, but ultimately I tune it out after awhile by doing other things, because I am like a ferret on jolt cola.

Digi
Because of this, More than anything, I just want a fancy day at the spa where someone wraps me in warm towels and massages my hands, feet, face, whatever while using exotic lotions and oils. Some of the "detox" aspects of such things are pure hippie nonsense, but that's not what I'd go for.

No problem. I was excited to share it!

I'm sure some form of focus can recreate it (meditation being one option). After all, a couple days ago, I wouldn't have thought a video could do it. For example, getting a head massage...absolutely! Watching a POV video of a head massage...I wouldn't have guessed it! It's all about recreating a mental state. So it's got to be possible with various meditative techniques.

The blacksmith story is amusingly specific, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Craftsmen working elicits the same response in me. It could be as obvious as a massage or as surprising as a car mechanic. I've experienced both, and many others besides, including musicians, hair stylists, leatherworkers, tailors, etc.

I've seen some Youtube comments that are surprised a particular video works for them multiple times. Which means they've experienced diminishing returns with other videos. So yeah, this probably happens with some of it.

Hasn't happened to me yet, though I haven't watched many. But 1-2 that I enjoyed were just as good the 2nd time around. I'm working from home this week because I'm sick as balls, so this has been a great way to pass some time since I'm low on energy.

The other explanation for variety probably just has to do with triggers. What works brilliantly for one is worthless for another.

Stealth Moose
Very true. A large majority of the videos do nothing for me. Whispering seems to be the big trigger, if any exists.

Sorry you're sick. Everyone around me has the uber flu these past few weeks but I'm perfectly healthy.

I get that tingly feeling when I flick the base of my nutsack just as blast both barrells of my porridge gun into my belly hair. Sometimes it's too much like hard work and I fall asleep in the middle of loading it though.

I'm gonna hazard a guess that's not what this is about? I admit I skipped over the details. I promise I'll go back and post a more appropriate response once I've found a sock to wipe myself with.

Actually. It's dark and that seems too much like hard work as well.

I wouldn't associate it with sexual terms like orgasm. The sensations are nothing alike, at least to me. And the fact that things like metalcrafting can elicit an ASMR response adequately shows that it's not a direct appeal to the erogenous zones of the brain and/or body. I suppose there could be some overlap in certain situations, but not as a rule.

Dudemon mentioned music, which is an interesting comparison, because I'm not sure I've experienced the same thing as a result of music, but the responses that music can create within me are at least nearby on the sensation spectrum.

I hope you explore a bit more though. You may find something that creates a response for you.

Lol at the expected joke. I thought about wording it differently to prevent it, but I wanted to let nature take its course.

I'm not sure how I feel about a foot massage. But the other two are enticing. Now, the place is a bit out there, and will undoubtedly package that stuff with useless hippy crap like healing crystals, cleansing oils, etc. But whatever. Won't ruin the experience.

We're also taking a weekend trip to St. Louis in about a month where we're going to go to, in this order, a swing dancing night, a trampoline park, a Renaissance Faire, and a science museum. The trampoline park is a surprise...she has no idea it exists. I'm like the best boyfriend ever (though sadly, not rich).

Sort of related, but, I got the ASMR feels when in gradeschool, they checked us for lice. I USED to get the ASMR feels when getting a back massage but for some reason, it doesn't happen anymore.

The eye exam still is a big one, for me. I don't know why...but them feels. There doesn't even have to be physical touch involved. It's weird.

Lame story time: when I was in the 8th grade, we were doing a lab that required us to measure something related to the eyes. I forget what the lab was about (I think it was to show that our eyes are more sensitive to certain colors of light compared to others). The exam was to measure the changes in our pupil size (dilation). I was paired with a good friend but it was a dude. I HATED the fact that he gave me "them feels." I wanted the cute girl to be my lab partner. sad

I brought that up to say this: I think kids should be taught about this because those feelings could be scary for some or confusing for others. I think they should be taught that it is not a sexual thing and to not feel bad about having them.

Digi
Playing with tape and stickers. I have done it for years. I don't get brain tingles exactly, maybe because of how long it's been a habit, but the sensation is similar to ASMR responses. I found a couple videos of this, so I'm not alone with that trigger.

No joke. Right up until the point where I subtly sabotage a chance at lasting happiness at around the 6-9 month mark by distancing myself from the relationship after questioning its ability to last, making each inevitably doomed relationship a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I just now noticed this thread. I've been following the ASMR community since a bit before they even had that acronym in wide use, I've always had really, really bad insomnia related to some other things that keep me awake, so it was something I came across looking for white noise years ago.

As an aside, I've noticed I can actually get ASMR from reading descriptions of actions, the sorts of actions that I'd normally get ASMR from seeing and hearing, such as someone painting a picture. Anyone else ever get this?

There's become a distinction for me, where I am relaxed by some videos and enjoy them in a hypnotic way (this video qualifies), but they don't give me "tingles" per se. I think part of it is diminishing returns after watching a bunch of ASMR videos. But it's always been easier for me irl than on videos, so that's part of it too. If I got to see a watch being made irl, I'd probably melt.

In related news, I had a 1-hour massage with my gf the other day as a birthday gift from her. It was spec-damn-tacular. I highly recommend it, despite the (probably prohibitive) price.

Yes, I'm noticing the ASMR desensitization. I try to limit my video watching on these things to like...once every 2 months.

Also, some back massages give me complete and full ASMR feels. This one old man who had what he labeled as a "Vietnamese" style massage practice gave me the most relaxing and ASMR-ish massage I've ever had. In his own right, he's an artisan, too: decades of honing his craft to perfection. Someone should do a documentary on that guy. Maybe a short 10-minute one where he explains his techniques and demonstrates them. To date, I have never run into anyone who employed his techniques in a massage (and before anyone tries to make this sexual, Robtard, he did nothing of the sort. He just had excellent techniques for relaxing the muscles and giving an enjoyable massage).

Usually, I get deep-tissue massages from my employee's wife. Those are almost NEVER comfortable. I should get one of those relaxing massages, like you describe.

It was "medium" pressure, as she put it. There were moments of discomfort, but the overall experience was very relaxing. If I had the money, I'd get one like once a month.

I'm not too concerned with desensitization. It's still relaxing to me, even if I don't achieve full tingle, so to speak. I have a video on in another tab as I write this, for example. Without my full concentration, I'm not going to experience tingles. But it's still enjoyable. So...I dunno. I guess I'm ok with quantity over quality.

I ran across the funniest/weirdest/most perverted version of ASMR.

Since we cannot post links that have porn, google search "NSFW ASMR Reddit"

And you'll see the /r/nsfwasmr link.

I watched a couple. Here is one of the ones I watched (no nudity...so it is all good). I got the ASMR feels so this is legit:

Nusbt22QUvk

I should note that it's rubbing the lotion on its skin so it's not going to get the hose again.

Heh. I'll probably search for it out of curiosity, but ASMR is an entirely different endeavor than fapping for me. So I'm not likely to enjoy the mix of the two. Thanks though.

Yeah I googled this a while back. I didn't realize so many people experienced it. It used to happen to me all the time when people would explain concepts to me.

I also seemed to get it a lot when watching the Matrix. Mainly in the scene where Neo is listening to the Oracle.

She can have my hose in the face if she wants.

I'm a naturally cynical and distrusting person. I keep waiting for all these whispering videos ending with one of those extremely loud screams and scary faces popping up.

In fact I might just start an ASMR youtube channel with exactly those kinds of videos cos I'm a bit of a **** that way.

Interesting. I can see how that would happen, now that you mention it.

If you're really worried, just browse a few comments. If there's even a slightly louder noise, sometimes people will point it out.

And, troll humor or not, many people suffer from sleep deprivation and use ASMR as a tool. Further, many are listening with headphones on, and a sudden loud noise could be damaging to their hearing. I'm ok with getting a laugh by trolling in quite a few instances, but certainly not here. Consider what you're doing, and how it could legitimately harm people, before making such a video.

Well...Digi is saying that people trying to seek out therapy due to stress/anxiety or sleep issues probably don't want to be pranked in the manner you're suggesting.

Of all the types of videos you could do the scream-scare prank on someone, those are probably the worst choices possible. It would make you a massive c*nt.

HOWEVER...that also makes them the absolute best choices because that's their intended purpose: scare the utter-living f*cking shit out of someone that is definitely definitely not in the right state of mind to expect it. The contrast would be the perfect setting.

I don't have mental issues so if I ran across one of your proposed videos, I would laugh. And I would say, "You got me, b*tch. Well done."

jaden101
People seeking therapy for anxiety, stress or sleep issue should probably be looking for better help than YouTube can give.

And many likely are. Many others just need relaxation after stressful days. But does this give you license to potentially scar them in ways both physical and psychological?

No, your casual disregard for the well-being of strangers is already obvious enough.

You're thinking of YouTube from 5-7 years ago. YouTube now has genuinely helpful videos out there for people needing help who may not feel comfortable seeing a person, don't have money, or don't have time (say, they work a night shift or long days).

This is not to say that I want to discourage you from trolling people. The comment replies you'd get from one of those videos would probably be quite enjoyable to read. The tears...

I don't wanna encourage someone to harm others, though. sad Please don't do it. But if you do, I will laugh with you.

Digi
Dudemon, forget mental issues. Tinnitus and hearing loss is at epidemic levels among certain younger age groups due to the omnipresence of video, music, and noise in society. Some of that is the responsibility of the individual, but it also casts a pall over any seemingly "harmless" pranks like what jaden proposes. Find an online "prank" that involves an air horn and check out the comments if you need further evidence of this.

There's also the less clinical, but still important, matters of stress and relaxation.

I wouldn't laugh. I'd report it to Youtube and leave a comment warning others. It wouldn't be funny, and it would suck for a ton of people for no good reason other than the person is an *******.

dadudemon
Couple of things...

1. I saw dat edit. You dropped the edit down to this post. It just so happens I read your edit and acknowledged that edit in my post ("...harm..."wink. 313

2. I live in a world of rules and restrictive social norms. I have ODD. Trolls, in some ways, scratch an itch for me that I am unable to reach. I would never wish mental or physical harm on another person (unless that person is a piece of shit...dammit, they deserve mild harm, at least). So, I would not support Jaden's efforts to troll. HOWEVER, if he does, I'll definitely want to get some scratching.

We have thoroughly derailed one of the best threads on KMC, at this point. Everyone has been really nice and civil in this thread (I think) and lots of mature discussion has been had. I don't want to further encourage derailment of an otherwise good thread. So I'll shutup about it.

Digi
Agreed. I won't be spending more time on it/him. If wants to waste his time making a video for a few cheap laughs at the expense of strangers, there's no law against it. I'd consider it lowly and pathetic, but it's not like any meaningful audience will be reached, so it won't affect me personally.

Luckily I have a casual disregard for your moral high horse opinions as well.

Your over reaction to a flippant post is quite enough fishing success on this subject for me.

Digi
I thought my initial reaction was quite measured. I didn't flip out, I just brought the relevant concerns to mind. If it was really that flippant, you had about 2-3 posts after your initial one to clarify it as such. Instead, you persisted, and I responded in kind. My "overreaction" was after you confirmed your initial intent twice. I had no way of knowing you were just being "flippant," though it's a predictable, if unfortunate, response that you're just playing it off as though I'm the jerk here. I stand by my comments, and the dangers of doing what you suggested.

But now the options are either that you are a jerk who wants to cause stress (or worse) to strangers, or you were just egging me on for a troll reaction. Either way, I've wasted enough time on a meaningless interaction.

jaden101
I persisted? I only mentioned it once.

I would've thought my reply alluding to the joker's 'why so serious' quote along with my initial crass opening line and my 'cos I'm a bit of a (unt' remark made it pretty obvious i wasn't being serious. Apparently not.

Not at all, actually. The mention of the Joker calls to mind anarchic statements of mayhem more so than "Why so serious?" I'm a comic fan, though, so I don't consider that quote to be as synonymous with the Joker as many others do. That quote didn't even cross my mind, and I took your Joker allusion as an endorsement to create such a Youtube video for the purpose of trolling. Joker is one of comics' biggest villainous trolls, after all, so yeah, it wasn't even remotely clear, and sent the exact opposite signal.

Same with the earlier post. "I'm a bit of a ****" doesn't imply anything beyond just that. It's easy to misinterpret things in written language, but I don't see how that was clear either, as it again sent the opposite signal to me. We're on KMC, after all, where casual *sshole comments are commplace, and often times meant in full.

A misunderstanding, then. I'm glad you don't really want to traumatize ASMR viewers.

jaden101
That'll do. If it makes you feel any better its not something I had even the remotest interest in doing. Although I'd not be surprised if there already are videos like that. Given their prevalence.

I've not come across any. It would be hard to build any kind of audience doing that, which then snowballs into search results and such. To actually fool more than a handful of people, you'd need to actually have a legit ASMR channel for a while, and build up a following. I'm guessing that's far beyond the patience of those who would want to do something like that.

I'm guessing it would consist of simply 'stealing' legit content and tacking a scare on the end. Or something like the 'do you know this girl' video on Facebook as those videos spread more readily on there. I'd also guess it'd be more to catch out passing interest as opposed to people who seek out ASMR videos.

Sure, there's no shortage of those things on Youtube. But they aren't targeted at ASMR. I think the classic one is that zombie in a field, and it's a commercial for some energy drink.

Here's a lovely video I'm using as a bump. Girl's got an excellent ASMR voice:

It's interesting, as a non-ASMR person, I actually find some of the ASMR videos insanely grating.

Digi
Oh, it's not just you. Everyone has their tastes. But there's probably more that will annoy you than someone who can feel ASMR.

Digi
An interesting video:

u0ZNzpsvZoc

It's literally the same ~30 second tune hummed over and over again while she dances/jingles. For some, it's soothing and hypnotic.

Digi is right. For instance, the video Digi just posted. Lawd Jeezus. That was irritating. The clinking did to me how some people get with nails on the chalk board (which does not bother me).

SamZED
I find many of these videos relaxing and enjoyable, but I don't think I really get it the way ASMR people do.

This is the weirdest ASMR I've ever seen, rivaled only by Ephemeral Rift's weird ****ing videos.

Digi
Yeah, that's some weird sh*t. I mean, whatever works for people, that's great. And I was genuinely impressed with the one dude whom you posted earlier, doing the "manly" ASMR. But I mostly stick to more standard stuff...i.e. pretty girls doing binaural roleplays.

I think we've identified my tendencies. Other stuff can trigger my ASMR, but pretty girls with soothing voices talking softly into a binaural microphone is pretty much my thing.

I feel like this is a Youtube thing, though. IRL, I feel the sensation most often when people are doing work. Watching a car mechanic or cable installer doing their work has as much chance to give me tingles as more traditional things. And noises like scratching and popping don't do it at all for me. The exception there is tape. For me, playing with tape is the equivalent of using a stress ball for many people. But I need the tactile sensation. A "tape sounds" video would do jack all.

I'm just so thrilled I discovered this. I had no name for the sensation, and no idea it could be voluntarily induced. I'll often just leave ASMR videos on in the background while I'm doing other computer work. It just improves my life in all kinds of ways.

I watched 15 seconds of that video and realized that that video is much better enjoyed with a decent pair of headphones. I was in my office and played it on the surround sound but I don't think that does a video like that justice (even a shitty pair of headphones would probably be better for what that video was intended for).

Good find. Thanks for sharing. I will watch this vid before I go to bed, tonight. That's in about an hour. I suppose my wife will think I'm being a perv or I am weird. I will not explain to her what is going on, lol.

Digi, that last one you posted gave me a very very strong ASMR response. It was actually too strong. I think that may be because I haven't done the ASMR stuff for a long time.

Lol, sorry?

Lots of people say they feel it stronger after a long break from ASMR, and I've experienced that as well, so that part makes sense. Never heard of it being too strong, though. I'm actually kinda curious what that would be like, though I'm sure I've never come close to that level of reaction.

Time Immemorial
The water whispers literally put me to sleep for months. I really like her presentations.

MenionLeah
I love this kind of stuff!

Digi
Been a while since I bumped this. So as I watch videos, I tend to get a ton of tingles for particular videos for a while, then they stop doing it for me and I find new ones. Recently, a couple ASMRtists have been doing it for me:
DianaDew: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcI4IsbYh8XugPTbhXFPZfw
ASMRLoa: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNG_Vlt8Odsd61k--UMvUvg

Waterwhispers is the channel that got me into ASMR, but Ilse doesn't do much for me these days. Heather Feather gave me the strongest tingles for a while, but she's more hit & miss for me these days.

Hopefully that gives you guys some new, interesting stuff. Happy tingles.

None of this stuff works for me insofar as the tingles, but I listen to it fairly often as "background noise" that helps me focus on tasks, especially at night, when I'm tired.

It can definitely help with focus. I use it as background noise a lot for similar purposes.

Bump

So one of the things I never really mentioned is more ambient stuff. It doesn't necessarily give me specific ASMR brain tingles, but there's something relaxing about it. So, for example:
http://www.rainymood.com/

Another that I like is http://asoftmurmur.com/ ...it's like Rainy Mood, but has more options for sounds and sound combinations. https://www.calm.com/ also has guided meditations in addition to various soundscapes, which can definitely trigger tingles in many.

I'll go entire days at work with my earbuds in listening to these, because it helps me stay on task, and keeps me relaxed enough that I don't get tired as quickly.

ArtificialGlory
These videos where a person is getting all close and "personal" and supposedly touching/examining you are awkward as hell. Can't bear to watch them.

Calm.com is almost identical to what I'm hearing right now outside my window minus the water.

Everyone has their thing. I don't mind close-up vids. And this thread is probably heavy with them because I've posted most of the vids here. But there are a couple ASMRers I've seen that overtly sexualize it. Of course they have epic numbers of views, which is the point. But it's cheap. I stopped watching one in particular. She could actually induce tingles in me, but it was clear she was pandering for likes/views/subscribes.

I've heard the tingles described as a "brain orgasm" so maybe it really is a sexual thing for some. But I think it misrepresents the phenomenon, because for most it's a relaxation tool, concentration aid, or sleep aid.

yeah, most never realize what it is, but sort of experience it by accident. After I broke a finger and had to go to physical therapy to regain my strength in it, the girl who was my therapist had an amazing voice. The gentle movements combined with her voice is probably the first thing that ever produced it for me.
