Gump is a war vet, medal of honor recipient, top sprinter, ultimate distance runner, gazillionaire, hurricane beating, fisherman(officially the most dangerous job in the world) badass. Zan is a shit tank commander and expert in dying stupidly.

The rescue Gump made for Bubba and Dan was more heroic and badass than anything Van Zan did. Gump saved his team mates whereas Zan got his allies killed on multiple occasions. Also Gump jogged practically non-stop across the country, so he's definitely in top shape, definitely more than a guy who with a prolonged beatdown couldn't even slightly weaken a starving man.
