For their time, or ever? Because, for example, Spider-Man was original when he was created, but is practically a trope in 2014.

Not as much, imo. Google "inspiration for Superman" or something similar. Even Big Blue was a knockoff.

I think some would disagree with you on this selection.

I Agree. The novel Gladiator and character Hugo Danner was a massive inspiration. Same powerset to his original levels to the T. plus Seigal and Shuster wrote a review on the novel in a 1931 Sci-fi fanzine. They certainly couldn't claim they weren't aware of him.

He was modeled after Question and Mr. A.

Whatever their tiers may be, I'd say Spider-Man, Deadpool (maybe not his powerset, but his personality), Ghost Rider, Spawn, the Green Lantern mythos in general...there are probably quite a few if I really sat and thought about it.

Didn't Cpt. Marvel actually come before him as well? And at the time, their power sets were even more homogenous than they are now.

This isn't about fictional bragging points on a vs. board. This is history. It takes nothing away from Kal to say that it wasn't an original idea at the time. The longevity and popularity of the character have long since made such points irrelevant to any discussion of Superman's importance as a cultural icon.

I think some would disagree with you on this selection. How many characters spend 80% of their comic trying to get rid of their powers? How many characters battle multiple personality disorder? How many characters are demonized by the superhumanhuman, mutant and civilian population of their respected universe (not as a super villain)? Attempted suicide? etc

You've admitted to hating the character so I mean...

The Shadow well strictly speaking he originally wasn't a comic book character but now he is and he is the only reason we got stuff like Batman.

Back in the 1930s there was nothing like him either. The first of his kind. A flawed sadistic hero with an evil laugh that dealt in ruthless justice.

Wow! There are some awesome-sounding characters on those links, thanks for posting them. I think comics would be more interesting if we had some of them back.

Action launched Supes in 1938. Fawcett (Whiz comic) came out with Cap in feb or march 41. Cap was originally more like mosern power lelvels and was doing some amazing sales (actaully had some months where whiz sales were over a million) and superman was steadily amped from that point. By about 42 he was easily bronze age if not SA levels ( def sa by 36 though)

Seigal and shuster first piched their concept in 32. The original idea was more like a merger between Kal amd Lex Luthor.

Favorites definitelymBlack Hood and Comet

The Shadow is the most original. He came before Batman and Superman in comics, novels, and Radio.

The Shadow knows!

Silver surfer Indeed.

When he first appeared, the simplicity of his appearance and his flying standing on a platform, were pretty unique. No elaborate spandex outfit, no standard, horizontal flying position, plus extreme pacifism coupled with a tragic backstory...it all made for a very novel character.

Or. Oooorrrr. I just wanted an excuse to post the quote I found likening Hulk to an erection.

Your points are entirely valid. No argument from me. It's just a hilarious quote.
