He wants to be a hero but being a hero requires a special ability called a "Quirk."
80% of humans have quirks but very few people can make it into the Hero Academy. They have to pass a written and a practical exam to get in. While Midoriya is definitely smart enough to pass the practical, he has no quirk so his ability to get in is in doubt.
Unlike other shonen main characters, he is very smart and very educated. He is also neurotic.
