Is that an actual power of his?

Yes. Although I don't recall reading any books with him using it. Just various posters, handbooks and wikias mentioning it. I guess it's an ability used very rarely, maybe forgotten even. Like Nightcrawler's shadow blending or Modern Warpath's flight.
