Pre-Crisis Golem was way more impressive. Gave Superman a fight, IIRC.

The Sand entity absorbed 1/3 of his powers. When asked if he wants it back, Superman refused, and was permanently depowered ever since Superman #242 (end of SA, beginning of BA). Even 9 issues before his official depowerment, the editors said that they're going to downgrade Superman's power level in #233 letters page. Later letter pages confirmed his depowerment and it was quite evident based on actual showings.
