What are your opinions?
Is this bordering on child abuse? Or is this the best method of training children for the Olympics?

Research shows that how those around the children view the abuse will determine how well the children can handle/adapt to the abuse without long-term repercussions.

Since this kind of abuse is seen as a very strong cultural norm (and expected), likely, there is not much severe negative consequence to this training.

However, some will react negatively and even have PTSD from it.

And this is about as scientific as I am willing to be about it. Physically and emotionally hurting children, on purpose, for entertainment, pride, and vanity, is despicable. But this is my own set of morals speaking. To others, it is literally a rite of passage such as the Amazonian tribe that creates a glove full of bullet ants that repeatedly sting young men so the young men can prove they are now "men":

Yeah right "bordering on". Shittier border control than Mexico/America. That's sick.

Tzeentch
And yet they still struggle to beat us in the olympics lol

America master-race ftw

Nephthys
That its so pointless just makes it worse. Imagine living through all that for like a decade and then losing.

Tzeentch
Indeed. I've heard that losing has some pretty shitty consequences as well.

China really is like a textbook cartoon villain.

Omega Vision
I think people should be more honest about what the Olympics is: a dick measuring competition and a money making machine. Can all the bullshit about "togetherness" and "virtue."

Tzeentch
I don't think anyone these days is really under the impression that the olympics are anything but a dick-measuring contest.

Well, we know China isn't going to medal in that. thumb up

Norway on the other hand....

There are black people in Norway?

That's why he was unfairly banned.

The Chinese were ruthless in their training just for the performers for the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. The scene with the 10,000 drummers for example. Toilet breaks were becoming so disruptive that they made the drummers wear adult nappies/diapers in order to practice.

They'll dominate any and every sport going if they put resources into it like they did with ping pong and are beginning to do with gymnastics and snooker as well as some non sports like classical guitar. The dedication is both terrifying and awe inspiring.

Is this bordering on child abuse? Personally, it seems so to me, though cultural context will be a factor in determining how these kids end up emotionally.

Or is this the best method of training children for the Olympics? Our athletes aren't trained like this (or are they?), and we do pretty darn good, so I would say no.

Then again, look how Spartan children were (supposedly) raised, and they grew up tough as hell.

riv6672
Exactly (your Spartan example).
I've seen/been in many training programs that ares straight up abusive. Its a successful training method.

Aside from a few grimaces and tears, there is nothing particularly shocking about these pictures.
