The Daizenshuu said that Gohan, even in his ultimate peak power, could go Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2. ASIDE from a plot device, why didn't Gohan utilize this when fighting Super Buu w/Gotenks and Piccolo?

That wouldn't make sense. The Mystic form was supposed to unlock all of Gohan's latent potential. Meaning that he has the strength of his strongest form, in his base form. This means that if he managed to go SSJ3, he still would only be as strong as his Mystic form, and would be draining all his energy MUCH quicker.

He CAN still go SSJ1-2, but it, in theory, should actually make him weaker. Unless he somehow manages to increase his max potential, which could be feasible.
