Has anyone heard the story of Joseph Carey Merrick?
http://www.yougottareadthis.com/the-elephant-man.html
It's a sad story. I had been looking up stuff for a science report on the skeletal system. Potential Problems, like diseases and stuff like that, happened to be on the list of things to include in the report. Entering Bone Diseases into Google.com, the story of Joseph Merrick came up.
They made a movie about it in the 1980's. They made it black and white for effect.

Catch 22
Yes, an amazing story. The disease was similar, if not the same, as that suffered by Roy Dennis who's story was made into the film MASK.
Member.
i saw a documentary show about him on discovery channel

You Bastard!!!!

Captain REX
Yes, I didn't see the whole movie. I'd like to though. Horrible disease, the Proteus Syndrome. But, thanks to Joseph Merrick, I'll be getting good grades on my science report. He'd be glad to know he helped someone instead of terrorized them.

Bespin Bart
They should put that on the tv more often. It speaks to people...

Captain REX
I think I'll go rent it.
BF, do they have that in stock at Blockbuster?

When I was a kid my family was close friends with another family with severe NF. Horrible disease. This family named Saunders where the entire family has the condition. Various degrees of the disease including the classic John Merrick clubbed foot and deformed head.
I have a coworker with the disease and it appears on one side of the body. Her children don't have it except for an older daughter who contracted the disease after her first baby. Like her mom its on one side of the body.
The most severe cases of this disease is where the tumors are not only outside the body but appear inside the body on the organs. Brain tumors appear also. That is the most severe case.
The Saunder's family is not deceased where the son died about 10 years ago.

That story is so sad. Can you imagine having to make your living in a freak show?
Hello brother of Rex! Long time no see
Corran
It was a very good movie, very sad, very moving. If you have not seen it then do so.
BackFire349

I could only see it once. Extremely intense. John Hurt did an excellent job. Anthony Hopkins was great.
People with this disease today do not make their living in freak shows. Someone with the disease as critical as John Merrick who are living in the west are treated from the moment the disease first appears. I don't know what goes on in third world countries. The family that I grew up with had one member who was almost as bad as John Merrick but it took YEARS for her to get to Merrick's stage. She died of old age.
