Yeah I know it sounds like a joke but its what Chris Matthews asked DNC Head Chair Debbie Wasserman......And her answer was...

Whats the Diff Debbie?

In theory or in practice? In practice, democrats act as capitalists under the guise of "fairness". In theory, there's no real difference.

I considered myself democrat till I met the wack jobs here.

Democrats are a party that spans a pretty large political spectrum and therefore includes people who would be considered socialists and people that would not. Socialism is a political ideology, which again, lives on a spectrum, and can have overlaps with social democrats on its left and communists on its right.

Hope that cleared it up

Not really No. Just sounded like Political Blah Blah Blah to me.

Have you moved over to the Republican side? If not, come on down, we have cake; it's delicious.

There are two kinds of socialists. The first, the actual kind, are a relatively small slice of the American political pie with very little influence who spend almost all their time trying to clear up misconceptions about who they are and what they want to do.

The second kind is a race of mustachioed cartoon villains in overcoats and tophats who carry old fashioned bombs with lit fuses and want to destroy America starting with the Constitution. Depending on who you ask, Obama is either their leader or their puppet.

Neither of these describes the democratic party, which is much broader and is mostly defined by its opposition to the Republican party.

Both of these work.

It's always fascinating to watch certain segments of Americans play these semantic games. For decades the evil word was 'communist'. Of course, communists never presented any serious threat- or had any significant presence- in American politics, but rallying against the communist within, or any behaviour associated with communism, was for a while part of a national obsession.

In Europe, where communism actually had some sort of foothold, it made rather more sense to see it as a viable enemy (if you were part of the political spectrum that disliked such positions), though it all pretty much fizzled out there (and never really got started in the UK). In comparison, socialism in Europe was a very positive word, embodying a lot of the 'better treatment for mankind' values that communism claimed but wrapped up as an acceptable part of the political spectrum.

But now in the US that they can't even vaguely pretend that communism is a viable thing any more, the move now seems to be to make 'socialism' the new pejorative mark of evil- this not only in defiance of any sense but also to the incredulity to the rest of the world which is hard put to identify any socialist policies seriously represented in the US at any point ever in its political make up.

It's very strange indeed to see it used as an insult this way. The good news is, though, that unlike the old communist witch-hunting days, the size of the American political spectrum that has such rabid hate for labels like this is very much diminished.

US Democrats are NOT socialist in any significant manner- their fundamental philosophy remains capitalist.

Nice perspective, Ush. thumb up

I'm more democrat than republican and I'm about as far from socialist as is possible in an economic sense. Not sure what that means, but it's my two sense.

Do coherent explanations normally have that affect on you?

A Democrat currently is just a Republican who isn't insane.

You say it like it's a bad thing.

Anyway, you at least attempt to respond to opposition points sometimes. Fly is doing the equivalent of putting his hands over his ears and yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" over and over. He hasn't even bothered to respond to any points made; which, if nothing else, at least make sense in a linguistic sense, so they can be responded to. Claiming that it's just "blah blah blah" is sophomoric childishness at its least disciplined. He - like this thread - is eminently ignorable.

But even if you don't agree with his assessment of the socialist/democrat divide, Ush's post is amazing for its sense of perspective. There's a ton of cultural similarities to the past that are driving us away from rational debate and progress.
