Was reminded of these movies again today. They've always been a guilty pleasure of mine.

I realized there must be a new one in the works and sure enough there is. Oct 2016 release date - IMDB? Not sure if that's confirmed.

The 4th one was okay, but as long as Kate Beckinsale is in them, I'll keep watching with pleasure (if you know what I mean)...

And for your viewing pleasure, some pretty amusing bloopers from the 4th film...

Viktor was a great character. RIP Viktor. You'll be missed.

And then it'll turn into CGI battles on top of buildings destroying entire cities, like a Michael Bay movie? That would be awesome... thumb down

For those of you who didn't know (because I just found this out the other day), there is short anime based on Underworld. It's called Underworld: Endless War. Haven't really had a chance to see much of it yet, though, it's kind of hard to find it seems.

Ridley_Prime
Only saw what I believe were the first two films. Might consider this one should I catch up on the others sometime. Guilty pleasure sums up the series well enough, aye.

Patient_Leech
^ The third one is actually pretty cool, kind of different. It's a prequel that leads into the first film. I need to watch the 4th one again, only seen it once, and it's been a long time.

quanchi112
Third one was the best IMO. Medieval times and Viktor there from start to finish.

Patient_Leech
I watched Underworld: Awakening again the other day and rather enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed the progression of the story, so I'm curious to see how it continues.

I think the second one Evolution might be the worst of the series, because it didn't really add much to the story. It does have some cool make-up effects and set pieces, though, so it's still cool.

Robtard
-Enjoyed the first
-Second was meh
-Third was alright, mostly due to Michael Sheen's character being fleshed out
-Fourth was meh

Not expecting much from the fifth, hopefully Charles Dance's character has more than a secondary role this time around, probably the best actor left in this franchise now that Sheen and Nighy are gone

Yeah, I agree. Would love to see him have a bigger role. Doesn't seem like he's going to be a natural leader, though, after watching the 4th film again. His son had defy him in order to defend their premises.

I just like these movies, not sure why (KATE BECKINSALE). I guess just the dark world they create, the uncompromising violence. Visually I think it's a very striking series, muted color palette, it has a fun story progressing through the ages. Also KATE BECKINSALE.

It pisses me off that these films have worse ratings on RT than the Twilight series. That's effing ridiculous to me. Those movies are such sloppy pieces of shit. I know Underworld isn't Citizen Cane either, but they aren't nearly the clusterf#ck that the Twilight movies are.

The_Tempest
First one was good, the rest sucked to varying degrees. Sheen, Nighy, Jacobi, and Dance are easily the standouts, though I'd give almost anything to rail Kate Beckinsale.

If she she continues to be smoking hot and Charles Dance continued to be Charles Dance, maybe 5 has a shot.

The Nuul
I liked the first and and second one that's about it. This series and RE has made me hate franchises. I am not looking forward to anymore of these

Khazra Reborn
Is this movie still coming? I wish Markus and William were still around though... This whole next gen vamp and Lucan kids thing doesn't really do anything for me.

juggernaut74
I'm down for another one as long as they go back to just regular Lycans and Vampires. Sick of all the hybrids running around.

Ascendancy
There was literally nothing memorable about the fourth film. It felt like half of it was just stock footage they shot during the other films and tossed in as filler. The plot was weak, the action wasn't anywhere near as good as the other films, and it didn't really connect very plausibly with the other either.

Five can be the charm; the 5th Fast & Furious is definitely the best put together out of the entire series, so we shall see what happens here.

Surtur
I liked the first two. Viktor was indeed awesome. I bought the first movie at a family dollar for like $3 a few months ago. I still enjoy it. I actually enjoyed Evolution as well. After that..not really, though I like the character of Lucian I did not like the movie about him. The 4th one was just..not good.

HulkIsHulk
I loved the 3rd movie. Liked the first one. Second one was bearable. Fouth movie was trash.
One thing I realised from watching all those movies is that I don't like Kate Beckinsale. Her acting was subpar in all movies except 2

Patient_Leech
Well, after rewatching the 4th film it's really not as bad as I first thought. I kind of liked where the story went. I mean, there wasn't really any other way for the story to go, I guess. It was odd to me at first, too, but it works.

Well, she wasn't in the 3rd one. I don't know what you're talking about. She brings a lot of credibility to an otherwise quite ridiculous role. She's perfect.

I kind of see where you're coming from, but the real appeal of these films is the character design and set pieces. It's a world. The world is fun. I can't stand franchises like Fast & the Furious where there's really no justification for the absurdity.. people jumping ontop of cars, and cars flying across to other buildings (Jesus, they really ran out of ideas with that franchise). And they bring in Jasan Statham (another action star) to build up excitement, so it's about the actor and not having a good character. Underworld incorporates good character actors and at least it's a fantastical world, so the action makes some sense. But Underworld owes a lot to The Matrix for its style, for sure.

Patient_Leech
(Thanks to Imp for the thread title change. 'Underworld franchise' instead of just 'Underworld 5' so hopefully the discussion can stay consolidated and there won't be half a dozen other threads created for it.)

BruceSkywalker
been a fan of kate for years.. these movies are highly entertaining. looking forward to seeing the next year

HulkIsHulk
Oh Kate can act alright. Its just that the scripts doesn't give her much to act imo. I've seen her other films and frankly I've always felt these movies are a waste of her talent which is what irritates me

3rd was easily the best with 1 not far behind then 2 and 4.

And Mila's also married to Paul W S Anderson. The director of Resident Evil.

Guess Anderson needed a few extra jets as well. Though at least the final RE movies had potential despite the glaring issues with them. UW 4 was garbage from first scene to last.

i remember

HelloLove
UNDERWORLD is one of the best franchises next to HARRY POTTER, I think they have done a great job in keeping the identity and concept of the series throughout. A bad example would be the TERMINATOR franchise, except for the two masterpieces James Cameron made - the rest of the franchise was a complete destruction of everything that was unique and groundbreaking with the first two - a bunch of complete amateurs, a clear sign the creatives should run Hollywood not bankers and lawyers!!!

I'm wondering if that derailed the story a little bit. Kind of a shame. I think Wiseman said he didn't really need him for the 4th film, Awakening (because they wanted to pursue a different angle), and so they didn't bother bringing in Speedman for such a small cameo. I haven't heard definitely that Speedman didn't want to do anymore, so who knows, maybe sometime down the line he'll return.

Nice find. Not a huge fan of the poster, though. Looks like that movie Whiteout (I think is what it's called) that she was in. I actually rather liked that movie, though, even without the great shot of her ass.

0mega Spawn
I feel underworld is ****ing up when it comes to the horror aspect.
That scene when those lycans are climbing down that hallway wall is the exact tone the films should continually carry...
Threatening, scary, awesome.

Now that selene is so powerful im more scared for her opposition than anything in the films erm
Even super lycan came off a fodder from the get go.

And the action is becoming a wire-fu selene wankfest. Get some damn choreography in these scenes. Drop the wirefu. Make selene appear to be in some sort of danger.

Patient_Leech
^ Probably a fair criticism, but just by the nature of her character you know she's not really going to die, for the sake of the franchise, until of course they eventually retire her character or 'reboot.'

Initially I wasn't a fan of the Uber Lucan, thought it was a bit unimaginative, but it grew on me and made sense with the direction the story went.

Yeah, I mean, looks like more of the same, which is cool. With a franchise like this you don't want it to stray too much from what's been done before. It needs a certain amount of cohesion.

The 4th really isn't as bad as I had initially thought. It's really the natural progression of the story. But yeah, the 3rd really is the best. Funny that the prequel is the best. I think part of it is that there is sort of a clash with the subject matter set in more modern times. The medieval setting was very cool and Michael Sheen is very charismatic and awesome going up against Bill Nighy.

TheVaultDweller
IMO, Michael Sheen's character was one of the best parts of this franchise, which is why 1 & 3 are also probably my favourites.

Patient_Leech
Just got back from Blood Wars.

It's good. I thought it was a lot better than the last one, Awakening.

This film harkens back a bit to the original, uses some similar plot development, but also adds some new mythology/fantasy to the series. Charles Dance is really good and even Theo James does well. It's filmed very nicely and features plenty of dark eye candy. I was surprised that Selene's highlights actually sort of make sense in the movie, haha. I rather enjoyed it. Go out and see it if you're a fan of the series. I do recommend brushing up on the previous films, though. I'm glad I did because it helped me follow this one quite nicely.

It's already done pretty well at the overseas box office on a low budget of only $35 million. That's dirt cheap by today's standards. (BoxOfficeMojo)

I agree about Michael, he was an interesting character. Especially since in the 4th film he pretty much seemed to be about to escape that facility he was being held in, yet he is nowhere to be found?

It makes you wonder if they got rid of him because they didn't want another good guy who was even more bad ass than Selene.

I used to think so, too. But I really don't think he's missed much. He was actually kind of boring. Pretty wooden character if you ask me. There's far more interesting character actors in the series and Kate Beckinsale fills the gaps perfectly with some emotion attachment for the audience.

I actually liked it a little smaller scale, a little more intimate. It's not a ridiculous Marvel movie climax with too much shit going on.

And Marius's decapitated head... fu#k yeah.

The main negative I found with the film was the design of Marius's shapeshifted form. He looked like a goofy hairy oaf. They should have gone back to the drawing board for that. Maybe they couldn't afford Patrick Tatopoulos or he wasn't available or something. Whatever the case it's a shame. And consequently the CG for his character looked pretty bad.

But other than that aside from some minor complaints I think the rest of it was pretty consistent with the rest of the films. The set pieces and scenery were very cool. Oh, and my other big negative was killing off Charles Dance That sucks. But I liked that there wasn't anymore human involvement like in Awakening and it really felt a little more like the original.

I'm keeping an eye on the box office receipts for this and it's broken even (more or less) now, so it's probably in pretty good shape to start making a profit.

And the foreign receipts haven't updated in a while, so that's probably a bit more now.

It's not performing extremely well here in the States, but then again it also wasn't very expensive to make.

Honestly, Michael was a much more interesting character than Selene. She would have been a blind little adherent if not for him. Actually Kraven and Lucien were more interesting than she was as well, and it was nice seeing Lucien back in RotL.

There were a lot of interesting characters. I liked Viktor and Marcus as well. Pretty much everyone is more interesting than the main character.

Selene is cool.

And hot. Plus I think Kate is a great fit for the role. She's a cool actress, likeable and badass at the same time.

Haters gonna hate.

Haters gonna hate. No, she's annoying. I loved her getting the crap kicked out of her by Marius.

The best film of the series is still to this day Rise of the Lycans.

She is cool in the sense that she looks good in tight leather outfits. That seems to be where her appeal ends.

You say she is badass, I just think of the time she passed out from blood loss cuz a dude shanked her in the shoulder.

You are the shittiest vampire ever if getting stabbed in the shoulder causes you to lose consciousness.

Selene may as well be made of cardboard, she's one of the most uninteresting characters, in a universe with so much potential. And the best part of the movie IMO, was when David and Marius both walked through a hail of gunfire and were set to brawl, then Selene just comes in and ruins it for one of the shittiest end fights ever.

Agreed. Somehow Leech loves her though because she's sexy or something. She's the worst.

Plus the way her fight with Viktor ended was stupid.

I'm probably a sucker for her brunette Britishness.

She's got charisma. Granted it's more of a dark, melancholy way, but it's a dark character, so it works.

I have to say I feel the opposite. Well no not exactly the opposite, I do think there is something melancholy about her. But I don't actually find her character to be charming or inspiring or anything like that. I have not seen the most recent film, so it's possible they changed things and she isn't so incredibly dull.

quanchi112
There is nothing to her. And yet she's the central character. She is the epitome of bland.

Yes, but she is Bland that looks hot in leather.

And that is enough to sell a Franchise in the 21st century

I think she's more of a subtle actress in the Selene role. She has some good subtle moments. And for films like this much of the time it doesn't require much more than looking serious in front of the camera and being a badass at the stunts.

Well yeah naturally, the movie went into production in the late 90's/early 2000's. She doesn't need to be interesting, just willing to wear leather outfits in every scene.

Movie goers were, at that point, still dazzled by seeing cliche special effects like "superhuman casually drops off the top of a building and lands perfectly on the ground" and slow motion stuff.

Damn, dude. You all are showing no mercy. Get on that high horse. It was more of a rip off of The Matrix in style, if anything.

You're forgetting there is a little bit of a story to the first film, too, you know.

Just saw it.

Wasn't good.

Well, to be fair, that other ****, Varga, ruined it first. But yeah, they built that up to what could have been a great confrontation between those two, and then made a hash of it.

I'll take that as a 'yes.' So your opinion is negated.

Did you at least put it on a larger screen? (not just your phone or computer monitor)

Sorry to cut you after all this time, but I hadn't checked this thread in a bit. No, there was no subtlety to her. She was petulant and melancholy, lacked depth, and added nothing to the movie but eye candy. The worst thing for the franchise was the loss of Michael and the memorable Lycans... on top of Selene still being in the films.

There is indeed a story, but Selene is just dull.
