My pick

Aside from her fight with Bats back in Death in the Family, beating Connor Hawk and beating Nightwing in Nu52. I see Shiva as someone who's sole purpose in comics is to make other characters look good. Batgirl, that telepath dude from Birds of Prey, Jason Todd etc

DarkSaint85
Martian manhunter

J'onn fits both criteria, I would argue. They just happen at different times. When a new enemy appears in JLA, it's usually either J'onn or Superman that gets put down to show just how dangerous the enemy is.

In Avengers, Thor quite a bit.

X-Men? I dunno... Rogue maybe. Wolverine sometimes.

celeyhyga17
Manhunter... Easily.

Sick power set, but gets beat the phukk down too often.

Surely Wolverine

Red Tornado

Lady Shiva doesn't fit that bill, she lost to Batgirl b/c she wanted to lose, in comics TP trumps common sense , I don't ever recall her losing to Jason Todd. But in DC the person that fits the bill is MM for someone of his potential he has lost at least 5X more times than SM eventhough he has less 1/10 his apperance per yr.

Thor

Ben Grimm.

His entire reason for existing is to get the crap kicked out of him by Hulk/Gladiator/Uber brick of the week, while the trio works on a plan.

And for DC, the entire GL Corp.

All 2600 or however many they have these days should be able to handle anything, but they usually end up getting slaughtered. Even teams with Kyle, John, Sodam Yat, and GANTHET get stomped by Mongul or a single Quadron, until Sinestro or Hal comes along and handles things..

HulkIsHulk
Wonder Woman and Supergirl. Though not even close to other guys mentioned here

She got one shotted by Todd in Red Hood and the Outlaws while Todd was also fighting like 6 or 7 League of Assassin Manbats who are 5 Tonnors

Galactus. No contest.

He is one of the top three/four powers in any MU and he regularly gets shat on by new forces/power-wielders, in order to make the threat credible-looking.

That and the jobbing he does.

HulkIsHulk
Croc. Rhino.

DarkSaint85
In recent times, the Phoenix.

Insane Titan

That and the jobbing he does. Superman & MM are good choices but yes, Galactus is an excellent choice.

I think Gladiator is a good candidate, particularly when you consider what happened to him against Hulk, Thor, the Phoenix Five in Avengers Vs. X-Men and later in Infinity Relativity against the reborn Hulk Amped Annihilus. Gladiator might as well carry a bat'leth.

RadZoa
I consider Gladiator more of a jobber than someone who worfs.

CosmicComet
Ben Grimm.

He is a career failure who gets his ass kicked so the rest of the F4 can have the shocked look on their faces on how strong their villain of the month is.

Sin I AM
Alotta people mentioned are just straight jobbers. All the worf effect means is who is the strongest character that gets ktfo everytime a big bad shows up

DarkSaint85
Manhunter gets KOed by attempting to read the minds of the big bad the JLA show up to fight.

Henry_Pym
Superman, the guy is written like 80's Hogan

Lose first fight
Crisis of faith
Hanging and banging
Beats same guy, usually fairly easily

In that case, Kyle Rayner.

Made a white lantern, and what does he do? Make Hal and Sin look good.

Magnon
Most cosmics/abstracts. Eternity, Celestials, Galactus, and so on. Whenever Thanos, Magus, Beyonders, ... go on rampage those guys get stomped the first.

TheLordofMurder
Eternity or any of the cosmic hierarchy in Marvel...

Think about their win/lose record; they typically only fight beings they cant beat (although Order/Chaos kick the crap out of the Inbetweener wherever he gets loose)....

Excellent answer... thumb up

Digi
Thor in Avengers books. I can think of like 3 distinct times where somebody utters the line "H-he just knocked out Thor?!?!" or something similar. It's not even implied. It's an explicit use of this technique, and doesn't include the times when the writers weren't so heavy-handed about it.
