Time-Immemorial
Does Authoritarian style leadership ruin things for others?

The answer is no, people love strong leaders.

...but then it isn't like they have a choice anymore.

Yes, because an autocrat can only maintain their power by suppressing the people.

You'll notice that there are zero countries with openly authoritarian governments that have a first-world standard of living. The reason for that is that the wealthy and the educated are an existential threat to the rule of the authoritarian government- thus it is to the rulers' advantage to always keep its people ignorant and poor. That's all well and good for the ruler, but it's obviously disastrous for a country's growth.

I'd tweak this. "Wealthy" people are not a threat to authoritarian regimes. There are quite a few wealthy and educated people in North Korea after all. It's a large middle class that always threatens a dictatorship because they're the ones who push for change and can motivate the poorer classes to rise up.

Yes. As proven by the obama administration's inability to accomplish anything but take away the people's power and increase it's own. Progressives are pure authoritarians who are proving to be more and more violent.
