Up until they locked sabers he was normal Windu. Sidious pointed his saber at Windu's chest and didn't go for the kill (since he had to keep him alive until Anakin came). Then Windu became pissed as hell at Palpatine, TCW, and the entire situation and they stalemated each other until Anakin came.

Riiiight.

@Jmanghan: It's because Mace practically stated in the novel that he'd never gone so deep into Vaapad before.
