Most impressive gauntlet in a movie?

marwash22
what single movie character overcame the most difficult set of challenges to reach their final goal?

Examples:

Kham (The Protector)
The Bride (Kill Bill)
Rama (the Raid)
John Rambo

The only rule is that, if a character is part of a series, you can only use one film from the series. For instance, you can't use all the 'Die Hard' movies because the stories are separate events; however, you can use both 'Kill Bill' movies or both 'The Raid' movies, because the events of the movies all happen consecutively.

nominate your own characters and discuss.

Nibedicus
Difficult with respect to their abilities or just plain level of difficulty overall (w/c would mean stronger characters get an unfair advantage)?

marwash22
if the stronger character had more obstacles relative to their ability, they are a valid answer.

for example, if you think MoS Superman went through more in his movie than any other character, regardless of the other character's power level, make the argument.

Nibedicus
Ahhh so relative to their abilities then.

Gonna think about this question. Gimme a day or two to answer. big grin

thumb up

Firefly218
Scott Pilgrim versus the world is a good one

TheVaultDweller
I'm not sure if this would count as a conventional gauntlet, but the whole journey Max and Furiosa had to go through in Fury Road, including the almost continuous fighting, was pretty intense.

it's one thing after another, so yeah, i'd say it counts.

Richard B. Riddick.

Escape from Butcher Bay/Assault on Dark Athena(Game, but is a canon prequel to the movies) - After being dropped in a supermax jail by Johns, he has to come up with an escape plan to get to the lower levels, then fight hideously deformed creatures as well as giant monsters, guards, power mechs...and Xzibit. After he and Johns escape, they get picked up by the Dark Athena. There, he has to stealth through the ship, murdering guards, more mechs, and even cybernetic drones to finally escape. He's even forced to leave a little girl behind before his escape pod is shot out of the sky and he crashlands on the planet below, Aguerra Prime. Then he works his way through an abandoned city, going through more mercs who are collecting civilians to replace the drones Riddick destroyed. Then he gets back on the Athena, and kills the boss.

Pitch Black - After crash landing on a savage, alien world. Riddick must fight for survival with a group of civilians, and a law officer who doesn't trust him. It's nothing but desert, and blistering hot as 3 suns keep the planet bathed in perpetual daylight. Also they've got almost no supplies, etc... Then they find out the native animals are hungry. Then it gets dark, and the flying swarms of tiny creatures give way to gigantic Proto-Raptors, who can smell them because Jack is on her period. He loses Fry(the pilot) who he'd grown to care about in the process.

Dark Fury - Almost immediately after escaping the planet, Riddick and crew are picked up by a nearby ship where the owner wants to capture Riddick and freeze him to be a living, conscious, human statue. He has to protect Jack and Imam, as well as fight through scores of Mercs, Toombs, and some crazy aliens. He also sees Jack, the once innocent girl he'd grown to care about and protect kill someone, starting her on her path of violence.

Chronicles of Riddick - After hiding for 5 years, he goes back to New Mecca when Imam puts a bounty on him. Once there, the Necromongers show up, take over the city, and kill Imam, one of Riddick's only friends in the process.(he also has a family) He also finds out he's one of the last of his kind due to Lord Marshal's cowardice on a prophecy that a child of Furya would kill him(ironically he set his own death in motion) After getting caught after murdering the guy who killed Imam, he's sent to Crematoria. There he reunites with Jack(Kyra), and they come up with a plan to escape. He almost gets away, but he gets taken down by Vaako and left to be incinerated. He gets saved by what is possibly the last other Furyan, and then has to watch the last link to his identity and past turn into dust. He finds Lord Marshal, and Jack. And in the process of the fight, Jack is killed. Riddick kills LM, and becomes the new leader of the Necroe's while the last person alive he cares about dies in his arms.

Riddick - Another five years later, Riddick is still Lord Marshal, but his people are starting to dissent as he refuses to go to the Underverse and "transcend". He's even had multiple attempts on his life. After making a deal with Vaako to get to Furya, he is betrayed once again. He falls several hundred feet to the ground and is buried in an avalanche, getting a badly broken leg in the process. After fixing it himself, he kinda just lays down to heal. Gets a pet wolf/dog/dingo in the process, and finds out about the Mud Demons. Venomous, two legged, scorpion things. He forces himself and his pet to become immune by repeatedly injecting them with the venom to build up a resistance. After killing some mud demons and getting to a merc station, he turns on the distress beacon because he realizes the massive storm coming means the mud demons can walk about freely. And there's lots of them. 2 merc teams show up, and he outsmarts and kills a few, as well as jacking their power nodes before getting ambushed and doped up with well beyond a lethal dose of horse tranquilizer. Oh, and his dog gets shot in the head multiple times. After waking up, the storms arrive, bringing tons of mud demons with them. Riddick first chops Santana's head off with a machete as revenge for killing his dog, then he and the rest escape. On the way, Diaz betrays them and Riddick has to kill him. Then he gets pretty messed up fighting Mud Demons after Johns leaves him. Thankfully he comes back and saves his ass(he also gets to F*ck Dahl). And after all this, he kills Krone(the guy who buried him) and intends to find Vaako in the Underverse, where he'll have to fight another super powered individual like Lord Marshal.

I'd say that's a pretty ****ed up series of events.

Ascendancy
Riddick is definitely up there. The final run up through the building and facing the fighters in the final room in the Protector. Technically some of Neo's battles in the Matrix, though they were poorly done.

Probably my favorites is the gauntlet in Kiss of the Dragon in the police station. That one was well done. Heck, the hotel and the chip shop fights were nice mini-trials of their own.

Honestly don't think there have been any bad mentions so far.

KingD19
The Protector was awful because he went through all that, and the mom elephant was dead long before he even got there.

Martian_mind
Respective to their ability, I'd probably say Frodo.

Relative to Dracula's abilities, that's not that impressive. He killed what, 10,000 men in a few hours without a scratch?

Another for the list. The Warriors.

jaden101
If its relative to their abilities then Jar Jar Binks has a good showing in the battle of Naboo taking out droids and battle tanks

But remember, Jar Jar is secretly a Sith Lord. shifty

That's why Vader tossed him out an airlock. He was competition in Vader's eyes.

Too bad the backlash of people hating Jar Jar made Lucas go back and change his orginal vision...

Jar Jar would have truly been the Phantom Menace as NOBODY would have see that coming...
