Obi Wan in TPM is no ordinary padawan; he's already considered to be one of the best duelists in the Order, and he's like a day away from being knighted. He was able to hang with Qui-Gon and Maul, two of the most formidable Jedi/Sith in all of history, with feats and accolades legions ahead of Qordis, who couldn't even do anything to trainee Bane.

We take Obi-Wan at the end of TPM, by which time he's already knighted.
