Hahaha to all those socialist big government fans who thought Hillary was going to win! Obama went way to far and trying to divide Americans all the time! Played the racist game, that wasn't working so he then started to play the sexist game, then that wasn't working, then started to complain that everything he did would be gotten rid of, and that didn't work! Good job America!

I guess Trump DIDN'T need Jay Z or Beyonce. AHAHAHAHA

The fact she needed those people shows how weak and pathetic she really was. She didn't even win a Michigan or PA or basically anythinglaughing out loud

I think you are looking at this the wrong way man. You say both are bad and I agree, but the difference is America does need change. You know, I know it, we all know it. We know that wouldn't happen with Hilary.

I understand being upset Trump is president, I'm not exactly truly happy about it. I'm just laughing at all the people who are super upset over this, but I'm not happy. However, in some ways I don't think this shames us as a country because this has never really been about Trump. This has been about not wanting more of the same. Trump came along at just the right time, with the country in the right state of mind to actually make an attempt at change.

Could it backfire? Oh hell yes, but people never truly believed Trump would win, and he did. So they would be fools to assume that there is a 100% chance Trump will be a disaster, since again..those people were already wrong once about Trump.

I don't know what is going to happen, but I like that this is just one big "enough is enough" from people. Maybe this will cause people to get their shit together to make sure it never comes to this again?

The only upside of this is that it might spark a unified and progressive movement from the left come 2020, yeah. smile

Well in the long run, the progressives are winning the demographics war; the baby boomers aren't getting any younger. And after this defeat, it's very possible that liberals will finally wake up and start turning out in comparable numbers (maybe, lol).

Is Trump the Republican party's swan song?

The younger generations could be way more conservative then they let ln, and just keep to the closet about it.

The fact that Trump got elected to spite the establishment doesn't comfort me at all, this isn't an elementary school playground, choosing someone as president to spite other people seems childish, and while Trump's different it's not a good type of different.

Hopefully this becomes a wake-up call for people never to elect someone like Trump or Hillary again.

This is certainly a memorable election for me.

1. I worked the polls, and saw first hand the insane turnout. Half mile lines, and I'm not even joking.

2. Election day also happens to be my birthday.

3. There was the ominous sound of thunder JUST as the polls ended. (That's when I jokingly thought "Trump must have won!", and whaddyou know. Sure, it's all coincidence, but sure marks the event.)

People become far less liberal and more conservative as they get older. It's been the same for as long as we know how to science these things.

Millennials are more conservative than their Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers were, at the same age, according to research:

"Millennials more conservative than you may think - Millennials The Conservative Generation

...millennials are more likely to identify as conservative than either Generation Xers or Baby Boomers were at the same age, said Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University and lead author of the paper.

...

'So the current view of millennials as liberals might be due to their age -- young people are more likely to be liberal. But if you compare young people now to young people in previous decades, those now are more conservative,' she said."

Maybe I'm skimming the article, but I think it also says that Millennials are more likely to identify as liberal - they're just more polarized in both directions. I do remember reading data suggesting that their liberal - conservative ratio was higher than other generations when they were of the same age, but I don't remember it off the top of my head.

A few points though:

1. The baby boomers will fade before the Millennials become as old as them.
2. If the Millennials end up turning right, they'll still make up a smaller share of the electorate at that age than the baby boomers will, leaving more for the next generation, which will presumably be quite liberal.
3. If the Millennials end up turning right, that'll likely be relative to their time, so the new republican party, if it exists, would look a lot more like the democratic one of today.

In either case, the Left tends to win in the long run, but it seems like that's going to be especially true in the coming generations, thanks to the demographics shifts.

No, it doesn't state that. It states, literally, "...if you compare young people now to young people in previous decades, those now are more conservative..."

It does say that young people are more polarized, for sure. But it is not more polarized in favor of liberalism. It says, "...the researchers found that the polarization that has emerged in the millennial generation may be driven by conservatives."

What do you mean "fade"? If you mean their numbers will be greater, I agree as that has already happened: millennials now number more than Baby Boomers respective to electorate.

Well, based on exit polling, seems quite a very large amount of young people, compared to previous elections, voted for Trump. This is not to say that they were conservative but they voted for a conservative candidate that had very strong conservative positions (gun control (or lack thereof), immigration, etc.).

Take a look at this data (it is a lengthy read but compare like-statistics to see what I mean):

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/11/08/us/politics/election-exit-polls.html

http://www.cnn.com/election/2012/results/race/president/

This result/data has gotten pundits scratching their heads. They are unsure if this is Trump-esque data or if this is a new trend of a conservative backlash (I guess I should say that this is a liberal backlash...a backlash against liberals). I think a position like yours is too strong of a stance in the wrong direction to be a right one, at this time. If I were to make a guess on trends and data, it would be the opposite of yours: seems we may be more conservative in the foreseeable future than we were in the past...

But perhaps that is false and it is simply self-identification that is conservative and not actual positions? Because they say that the millennials are extremely accepting of things like drugs and the LGBTQ community compared to previous generations.

What are your thoughts?

I don't know if I agree or disagree with this. I can argue both sides of it. When I get like that, it is better for me to just agree. I am not too sure, as you and I have agreed on in the past, about the future of the GOP. Perhaps Trump is the swan song of the GOP?

A former KMC member wants me to post this article in this thread:

"But as the returns came in, these same shellshocked experts were saying that nobody predicted this, nobody thought it could happen, nobody expected voters to turn out the way they did. "What did everyone get wrong?" CNN pondered.

Excuse us, but not everyone got it wrong.

IBD/TIPP's final numbers put Trump up by 1.6 points in a four-way race. As of 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, Trump was up by about 1 point in the popular vote. (The actual vote outcome will likely change as votes continue to be counted over the next several weeks.)

...

Not one other national poll had Trump winning in four-way polls. In fact, they all had Clinton winning by 3 or more points. For the entire run of the IBD/TIPP poll, we showed the race as being far tighter than other polls. This isn't a fluke. This will be the fourth presidential election in a row in which IBD/TIPP got it right.

The Los Angeles Times, which had employed a panel of people who were queried about their choice (and which had been ridiculed throughout the election) showed Trump up in a two-way race by 3 points.

In the final poll, Raghavan Mayur, president of IBD's polling partner Technometrica Market Intelligence, said he saw more enthusiasm for Republicans and independents. He said Republican turnout would equal Democratic turnout, despite the Democratic party's registration advantage. That appears to be the case. He said independents were breaking for Trump. That also appears to be the case.

We will have more to say about this later. But for now, we are happy to say that, according to preliminary results, IBD/TIPP has now had the most accurate presidential poll four elections in a row.
