I was kind of hoping for a continuation of HBO's Oz, but I knew it was too good to be true.

Is this Into the Badlands meets Wizard of Oz?

Is there martial arts in it?

I'm surprised in this version they didn't make Dorothy a child prostitute with a heart of gold(and also chlamydia).

Oh I am sure there will be Rape somewhere in her backstory....She apparently lives in a Trailer park so yeah. She gonna have had the rape.....and probably an abortion or 3. Cause Dorothy is White Trash now.

Wait is this on Netflix? Cause if this on the flix.....yeah rape 100%

Same director as The Cell, still one of the most mind-blowing movies ever made.

Yes, the same movie that won 6 awards and was nominated for more than 20. roll eyes (sarcastic)

LOL dude..you are not helping your argument by bringing up "The Cell". That shit is terrible.

Here is what you need to realize. Sometimes in the late 90's and early 2000's we thought horrible movies were good. It was some kind of weird disease. I can't explain it.

It's one of those movies where you don't know wtf is going on, but you pretend you do to seem "hip", without realizing that the late 90's/early 2000's version of hip is downright horrid.

Wait, Vincent D was in "The Cell" as well. Now this explains it. The director chooses Vincent whenever he decides to make movies that are shitty, but also kind of dark so if you say it's bad you can just refute it with "you just don't get what it was supposed to mean" and those types of arguments.

LOL dude... You are not helping your argument by stating, "That shit is terrible" simply because "you don't understand wtf is going on". First, you don't speak for everybody (clearly, based on the amount of awards it won and was nominated for) and second, a lack of comprehension on your part does not affect the quality of any product created by anybody. Saying a director "decides to make movies that are shitty" means you don't understand much about directing and saying "we thought horrible movies were good" means you somehow believe you are entitled to speak for everybody who watches movies. roll eyes (sarcastic)

What I will accept is that YOU didn't understand the movie and therefore YOU didn't like it.

I never said I didn't understand it. I just didn't like it. I also wasn't even really being serious, I didn't actually believe this person chooses to make shitty movies with a specific actor.

Ah, that makes more sense. wink I'll admit I have certain prejudices as well - I can't stand Christopher Nolan, for instance, and think he's totally overrated. So I would also be very sceptical about any project he's involved in.

I am just so fed-up with the whole DC Arrowverse at the moment that I'm desperate for anything fantasy-like that looks like it might be good and written by adults for a mature audience.

Surtur
Yeah, to be honest I used to love Arrow. Then I just kinda..fell off of it. To the point where I haven't even seen any of the new episodes from the latest season yet.

I like Legends of Tomorrow more than Arrow and Flash right now. I thought Arrow started strong last season in the beginning, but began to fall short.

Darth Thor
^ Yeah Legends is by far my fav of the Arrowverse right now as well. Flash is still decent but seems to have lost its mojo. Arrow just lost the plot in S3 and never recovered. Supergirl's just got too much cheese and is lacking a good season plot.

Supergirls going overboard with the prerequisite drama.

Two love angles, political soap boxing (Gun control, immigration), a hedonistic daxamite..

Oh, and self hating "white" martian who's people committed an act of genocide against green martians, who blame all whites for that atrocity.

I totally get you don't get onto the CW without making compromises towards the "target demographic" of 11-14 year old little girls, but pick your poison and do something non soap opera like for the actual comic fans.

marwash22
looks like shit.

Well, that was quite simply fantastic. In the best sense of the word, since it's a great fantasy world created by Tamren Singh and I enjoyed it - a lot. If the rest of the series is as good as the premiere I'm going to love it.

Dreampanther
I wrote a review for the premiere - watch out for spoilers! So far opinions seem to be very split, with people either loving it or hating it. Personally, I loved the premiere and can't wait to see what happens next. Here is my review.

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Fantastic in every sense of the word, Tamren Singh created an amazing fantasy world filled with fascinating characters. While every scene, every setting and every inhabitant of Oz pays tribute to the wonderful imagination of L. Frank Baum, Singh has managed to stamp his own vision and his own interpretation on it and transformed it into something even more bewitching.

Dorothy is a strong, capable and modern woman, her dog, a German Shepherd, is a K-9, the Scarecrow is a man with no memory, a mysterious past and a sword issued to the Wizard's Guard, the flying monkeys are drones patrolling the world and looking for danger...

I loved the original Wizard of Oz and I understand why people don't want to like this remake. But this isn't a remake or a reboot. Instead, it is a reinterpretation and it is wonderful and magical and spellbinding. It has action and drama and colour and magic and touches of humour that are so deft that I find myself chuckling long after the joke is over.

Take Eamonn, the man I assume is playing the Tin Man. Stalked by one of his own troops intent on murdering him and returning to Oz to claim the glory, blaming his death on lions, the scene cuts away just as he is about to be stabbed in the back. Later, when we return, the camera shows him strolling casually back to camp.

Stumbling about in the dark two of the would-be murderer's accomplices find his body, hacked apart, and take it back to camp to dump it accusingly at the feet of Eamonn. Unconcerned, Eamonn takes a bite of an apple while looking at the body, then just says one word: "Lions."

TheVaultDweller
I watched it. And I have to say, I expected something odd to happen at the end, after that kid stopped drinking that potion, but I did not expect 'him' to become 'her'. laughing

Fun review/posts on the show, DP.

I personally loved the hell out of the premiere (watched it last night).
Talk about scenery porn!
Every costume and view of the landscape...beautiful. Even our first look at Kansas proper was pretty frikkin' epic, giving a sense of the wide flat landscape that made me double take.
A fun take on a classic story that has great potential. Speaking of the classic story...

...i dont see why anyone wouldnt like it based on such a superficial reasoning.
The story's been done hundreds of times, from spoofs in cartoons (since the beginning of cartoons to this very day, so, almost a century), tobTV shows, movies...its been straight up re-imagined in outings like The Wiz and Tin Man, adapted into comics form.
Really, if you arent going to like this at least have a better reason.

Dreampanther
Glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoyed it. Like TheVaultDweller said, I found myself taken by surprise by one or two twists, which is always enjoyable when shows have become so predictable.

I also agree with riv6672 that it is worth watching just for the scenery porn. Maybe it's the fact that Singh isn't a typical Hollywood director but rather was born and raised in India and is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, that makes his work so visually enthralling.

TheVaultDweller
I personally thought it was a solid pilot. To be honest, my own biggest gripe was D'Onofrio's acting. It seriously felt to me like he just slightly tweaked his Kingpin persona, from Daredevil, for a fantasy setting. His Wizard character even strikes identical poses to Fisk, during a number of scenes. But then again, maybe the showrunners wanted that type of portrayal, which is why they cast him.

riv6672
I noticed that too.
Made it better when he dat down by himself and took his wig off, suddenly looking tired, and we saw he was putting on an act for everyone.
We got to see "behind the curtain" of his public persona.

samhain
Enjoyed the pilot episode and I'll keep watching.

Fair enough. We will have to wait and see how they further develop the character. Hopefully we get more peeks "behind the curtain" so to speak, so that we get a better idea of why he acts the way he does, as well as flesh-out why he took certain actions in the past, like banning witch magic. Based on him wanting the townspeople to "see" what they really are/were, and organising that whole scenario to basically humiliate/ridicule/demonize them, he seems to have some personal gripe there.

Yeah i'm looking forward to his backstory, which could go any number of ways.

Dreampanther
Ratings seem to be holding pretty steady at between 7 and 8 after more than a 1,000 votes. A lot will depend on the next episode, I think.

samhain
Bizarrely, whilst watching the episode, I was joking to myself that they should have cast a guy as the Dorothy character as though I was a SJW and then the ending happened! Glad for their casting choice though, she's hot.
