The timing probably makes it coincidental, but Doctor Polaris does predate Magneto by a few months.

The copycat argument should really only be used when your tongue is firmly planted in your cheek. Both companies have done this dozens of times. It means nothing in an actual estimation of the fight.

Each company having done it doesn't eliminate the fact a character is a ripoff, but you are correct about it in and of itself is irrelevant to a fight.
