he beat Yoda anyways, he's no coward he just didn't want to take the chance of facing somebody so close to him in power at such a crucial stage in his takeover

It also limited Yoda's motion to cartwheels and jumping around the outer edge of the Chancellor's pulpit.

Yoda could've been worried about getting dislodged and sent flying when he had Palpatine's saber pinned down, for example.
