Doesn't change that mace per lucas's word can compete with palps. Whether or not he threw the fight is irrelevant.

The novel, which Lucas edited line by line, explicitly mentions that Vaapad was the only way he truly could compete with Sidious - a luxury he wouldn't have against Valkorion.
