E.g., the way every tv show or movie needs to have a gay reference. Westworld or Game of Thrones having two guys getting it on.

Same sex couples are, what, only 1% of the population? By numbers, there's other marginalized groups with more representation in the population, yet they never get represented in television or movies.

So what determine's who gets written in to a show? Is it based on purchasing power (How much money as a group they have, making them attractive to advertisers?)

Or is it more basic: Every screenwriter simply follows what's trendy?

Everyone talks about gay marriage, so they write about it and make shows about it. No one talks about Native Americans, so nobody writes about them or cribs them into shows.

The latter would mark screenwriters as even bigger pop culture whores then the general public, imo. Taking their marching orders from Operah and liberal trash mags...

Bashar Teg
or just, you know, appealing to a broader target audience in order to make more money. thumb up

Flyattractor
Nah, it is just pandering. If they made a show only for Gays it wouldn't get enough viewers to keep the Leftist Money Grubbers that run "Hollywood" happy. Not that they don't mind throwing away money when they feel it can be used to cram their Politics down everyone's throats.

Cause that is FAIR....Right?

Yep. That is pretty much the Leftist Attitude when it comes to other Opinions in Hollywood.

Surtur
That is true. We're always hearing whining about not enough blacks or gays or trans in tv and movies. Nobody is saying "We need a Native American character".

They only care about Native Americans if they can get the NA's to complain about racist football team names and stuff like that.

Don't the Redskins just grind your gears?

Bashar Teg
because black people pay to see movies, just like gay people do, and producers want their money as well? no, you're right. it's all a conspiracy to make delicate rubes feel uncomfortable.

Flyattractor
And yet Tim Allen's show which had the Christian and Right Leaning Indiviuals was just cancelled because ABC got tired of His beliefs and Politics being on their network despite High Ratings.

And if you want to talk about a MINORITY on TV that doesn't get a a Positive Showing...Its the Right and Christians.

Frickin Russians, amirite?

Beniboybling
I agree, references aren't enough, all of it needs to be full blown gay. sad

Flyattractor
Will and Grace did that already. Its been done. Gay is Old. Transgender is the new.

Beniboybling
Nah but really, what I find odd is how straight people act like gay stuff isn't for them, like, it's OK to appreciate a gay romance even if you're straight bro. No homo.

Surtur
Beni sounds less like he is trying to convince us and more like he is trying to convince himself.

Beniboybling
u know i'm gay right bro. no expression

Flyattractor
Not really now. Everybody doesn't have to enjoy the same things as everybody else. There is such a thing as personal preference. That is like saying since you like Rocky Road Ice Cream EVERYBODY needs to like Rocky Road.

That aint how it works.

Beniboybling
Maybe give it a taste tho bro, you might like it. smile

Those people (eg Surtur) suffer from cognitive dissonance, they're supposed to be disgusted by seeing two men being in a loving relationship while trying to hide the erection they can't seem to control.

The only show I've initially thought anything like that was shoe-horned in was the "non-binary" character, Taylor in Billions. Turns out they're one of the best characters on TV currently and I stopped caring after their first appearance.

Need to give that show another shot, watched the first 2, maybe three, was alright but never went back. Keep hearing it's good.

This is extremely triggering. Brings up the PTSD I got from Bill Nye's ice cream orgy.
