Why is it in America we are removing markers of our history, although be it unpleasant, yet the Europeans and even Asians, maybe the rest of the world is ok keeping theirs to remember not to **** up again? I mean statues of Caligula, Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible), Genghis Khan, Megatron, etc, many others. Hell the Romans have a pretty large list of tyrannical leaders with statues. Yet at the same time, people in this country will wear Che Guevarra shirts and not know that he tortured homosexuals and although fought in the Congo, had an extremely poor view of African people. I don't understand this generation of pick and choose. Like you either have morals or you don't.

I think there is a fair point somewhere in people wanting to have the Southern US history represented and remembered in their respective states. For every colonial war France has started (to speak close to home), there were people involved in the governments, succession and resistance that are fully part of the current identity of each of those countries. I don't believe in trying to use such historical rivalries for political purposes, as well intended as those agendas might be.

I don't even have a stance on this issue yet, I'm just posing some questions. I'm kind of torn on the tearing down on the statue. Personally I guess I think it belongs in a museum more than anywhere else.

"Tearing down" isn't very accurate, as it kind of implies some kind of destruction. And the only one that's been destroyed so far is the one that was illegally pulled down by protestors. All these statues that have been removed legally have remained intact and moved to other locations. Though sometimes it is difficult to find locations for them, as sometimes private museums aren't interested in them because of the controversy surrounding them.

Regardless of my personal opinions on confederate statues, I'd rather have them in museums and private collections than see historical artifacts vandalized and destroyed by the public. Now my understanding is that people are protesting these symbols because the Confederates stood upon an inherently racist platform of slavery, and that those commemorative statues of, may I remind you, individuals, are guilty of many atrocities, which would yes, define what they represent, and serve as valid reason for their removal. The extent to which this is true or not I don't know, as I am not an expert on US history, but certainly, white supremacists seem to love them.

Al Sharpton is mad, doesn't want his tax dollars going to things he doesn't support, like confederate statues.

No word on what this means for people who do not support Planned Parenthood. Plus remember Al has a stellar tax paying record.

The fact that the alt-bros aren't prepared to defend Confederates but instead pretend these statues are there as cautionary reminders is also very tellling.

What part of "it used to" do you not understand? lol. You even used this point in your defense of the Union Flag. Come on man.

The Union Flag, which by even your own country, was not looked upon favorably because of its roots with the atrocities of colonization and use by British racists or far rights, has a bad rep itself. By your logic above, this would mean that the union flag should be removed.

My stance as it has been, is that it doesn't have to mean that anymore. Just because you like a confederate flag or Union flag does not mean you support what they once represented. I assume that most British are proud of what the flag represents now, and many of the people I know who brandish confederate flag merchandise don't promote slavery, but just a pride in the south.
