leonidas
so both teams have beaten some REALLY big bad guys. which team has the better track record overall do you think? which team has staved off the biggest threats and try and name them of you can. any incarnation that would be considered a 'typical' version of the teams is fine (not the 'every hero is an avenger' nonsense that ironman had going on just before the reboot...)

ShadowFyre
They've both faced down muktiversal threats. Nothing really bigger than that.

leonidas
on their own? which multiversal threats are you thinking of?

carver9
The Beyonders are one. Thanos with the Gauntlet is another.

IG thanos is not considered to be an avengers foe per se, but rather all of marvel since it was a company wide crossover. Ill try to limit this to purely the ones shown in Avengers/JLA books specifically. Also my list doesn't contain just foes which the teams outright overpowered but rather merely stopped (which could be via trickery or by other means).

Starting with the Avengers.

Namor with the cosmic cube
Surtur/Ymir
Dormammu with evil eye
Grandmaster amped-Kang
Korvac.
Molecule man (he had mental blocks but was still extremely powerful)
Maelstrom (amped by the kinetic energy of earth)
Grandmaster with Death's powers
Super adaptoid (mimicked kubik's powers)
Nebula with the infinity union (and the infinity union contained the compressor unit which can blink out the universe)
Wanda with multiversal nexi energies.
Mephisto and Satannish
Proctor (amped by the watcher and sersi's life energies)
Nemesis
Morgan le fey with twilight sword
Time keepers who also had the chrono cannon powered by the forever crystal.
the rot (it was an avengers foe in an avengers book but they had nothing to do with its defeat).
Infinites
inbetweener
cosmic cube absorbing man
Agamotto
doom with the power of life force
hela with the twilight sword
the hood with 3 (iirc) infinity gems
Thanos with the dark matter generator
Exitar
all-father ultron (with odin's powers)
Beyonders
beyond corporation member.

JLA:

Skarn aliens
Alien-nator (this one is specifically suited for this thread i think)
Anti-matter man
Faust (generally he's weak sauce but at that time he had universal scale spells)
Black sphere creatures
Aquarius
Starbreaker
Libra amped by milky way (although he did defeat himself kind of, i still think he deserved a mention)
demons three (when they were more powerful than mordru)
time lord with the super machine
the commander (amped by the psychic energies of a whole universe)
Despero (amped y flames of pytar)
Adam with Godhead powers (yes it was retconned to have been orchestrated by wotan but the retcon doesn't diminish its capabilities)
mr nebula
beldam
Yz/Lkz 5D imps
Cathexis
mageddon
Quantum mechanics
Red King with materioptikon
Dr Destiny with dream's powers
The trans
Luthor/joker with the philosophers stone (AKA worlogog)
Anansi
Eclipso with spectre's powers
Anti monitor

Again, those are foes which strictly appeared in JLA/Avengers books.

leonidas
nice list. thumb up

overall which group did the best against the biggest of their baddies you think?

operator616
It's pretty close but if i had to pick a side id say the avengers probably. Because i think they've defeated their foes with direct force more often than JLA did.

A one time villain who appeared in Justice League of America #231-232. He absorbed the psychic energies of his whole universe and became a cosmic entity.
