its been said ataru is disadvantaged in closed spaces

Honestly I wouldn't put it past Kenobi and Jnn to win on even ground. This is something I've thought about a lot for quite some time now.

hey i'm thinking about it to lol. must be the force

I can't see the duo winning.

Eh even on flat ground, Jinn still wasn't doing that hot against Maul on Tatooine from what I recall in sources.

I mean even the Theed duel, it was plenty of open space until they got to the generator room and it didn't help the duo much there so...there's really no difference here.

Well, it excludes the possibility of separation, so the team takes some rounds. Maul still 6-7/10 prolly.

Don't think so, tbh. The team were doing very well till they got separated individually. There are two sources from Obi Wan's perspective that state that the team was winning/on the verge of winning until Maul separated them. That aside, it has been explicitly stated that "the area favored Maul's style, making it incredibly difficult for the team to fight him". Which makes sense, I mean, they are Ataru masters, and constricted environments would only hinder them.

Also, from Luceno's End Game, on Tatooine, by the end of their fight, the fight was only beginning to tip into Maul's favor. Add another Jedi of almost the same caliber of Qui Gon, and I can see the team taking a minority at the very absolute least.

Or we could just take the fight as intended and pick up on the part where Maul was kicking their asses, instead of searching for extraneous details from supporting sources.

If it's from Obi's POV, then how would it be reliable if Maul was baiting them along? He could just be seeing it from a limited view and not actually realizing what was happening.

I mean I suppose I could see them taking a minority as well, but nothing else otherwise and Maul takes it overall anyway.

Not for the team. His main priority was in trying to separate them and apparently, he was using all his skills to do so, and another source saying that his skills were put to the ultimate test by the two Jedi, so the notion that he was baiting the "team" is fat out wrong. Why would he anyways? His main task was killing the two Jedi. If he was capable of exerting dominance over them as it is, then he most definitely would have done so.

By the novel, by the time he gets to the laser separated walls, he has already sustained several wounds, by the Jedi piercing his guard several times, though not inflicting any serious wounds on him. So, he was giving it his all when facing the team.

From Obi Wan's perspective, he recognized that the team was better than Maul and could beat him despite all his training, to be more precise.

For context, in the TPM novel, when Qui-Gon and Maul are fighting it out at the generator room, Jinn almost kills Maul, who barely jumps out in time. Jinn definitely wasn't a pushover by a long shot.

He was known to frequently spar with Windu and Yoda, and "humbled" the Temple battlemaster , whilst being pretty much a pure Ataru specialist.

Team.

Wasn't the fight potrayed as a stalemate?

Maul still wins.

8 > 7+7

Gillard math.

Kurk
Stalemate at best imo with the only wins going to jedi due to exploiting Maul's overconfidence/arrogance rather than any sort of skill/physical/force advantage on their end.

TheNuisanceBird
I think the reason why Qui-Gon didn't do that well against Maul is because he had just ran who knows how far with Anakin to the ship and in a deleted scene he knocks Maul off the ramp.

Regardless he did a lot better on Naboo.

Precisely.

slayne
Maul kicks their shit in.

Rockydonovang
TPM didn't have Maul beat the duo in a 2 v 1, he beat the duo in two separate 1 v 1's.

samappo
Again, Maul was superior duelist, but Qui-Gon had enough experience on his side to almost kill Maul at one point.
