Obama and Trump Myths: Fact Checking National Debt Claims

dadudemon
Lots of bullshit floating around the net. Saying that Trump eliminated the national debt, that Obama is the worst fiscal president in history, etc.

So let's go down the list:

1. Deficit fell under Trump by $102 billion: True

https://www.snopes.com/national-debt-trump/

(Snopes says its true and knowing Snopes mild anti-right position, I feel comfortable with citing Snopes on this).

2. National Debt Was Reduced by Obama when he took office: False

"On January 20, 2009, when he was sworn in, the debt was $10.626 trillion. On January 20, 2017, when he left, it was $19.947 trillion. That's why most people say Obama added $9 trillion to the debt, more than any other president ."

https://www.thebalance.com/national-debt-under-obama-3306293

3. Obama eliminated the deficit if you ignore his first year in office because Bush Jr.'s budget was already approved before Obama took office in 2009: False

This one is a bit tricky. The first part is false as hell. The second part is somewhat true, however:

FY 2009 - Even though the budget had been approved, Congress added emergency funding to stop the Great Recession. It added the first year's worth of spending from Obama's Economic Stimulus Act to the FY 2009 budget. That $253 billion accrues to Obama.
FY 2010 - Obama's first budget created a $1.294 trillion deficit.
FY 2011 - This budget contributed $1.3 trillion to the debt.
FY 2012 - The deficit was $1.087 trillion.
FY 2013 - This was the first Obama budget where the deficit, $679 billion, was less than $1 trillion. Thank sequestration, which forced a 10 percent cut in spending.
FY 2014 - The deficit was $485 billion.
FY 2015 - The deficit fell further, to $438 billion.
FY 2016 - The deficit rose to $585 billion
FY 2017 - The deficit was $666 billion.

https://www.thebalance.com/national-debt-under-obama-3306293

So even looking at it optimistically and ignoring the first year, Obama still had the largest total deficit of any president in history. That's even adjusting for inflation.

4. Trump is going to increase the national debt to over $28 trillion by the end of his 4 year term: True.

Trump took office with the debt at $20.245 trillion. When he ends his term, it will be $28.527 trillion. Less than Obama's. No need to adjust for inflation. That's still the second largest increase in US History (not by percentage by but raw dollar value).

https://www.thebalance.com/us-debt-by-president-by-dollar-and-percent-3306296

Did any of you fall for these claims and think the wrong thing? Were you surprised at the true statements? Are there other myths floating around that I don't know about?

Donald Trump (as projected in FY 2019 budget): Plans to add $8.282 trillion, a 41 percent increase from the $20.245 trillion debt at the end of Obama's last budget, FY 2017. If he spends as he hopes, Trump will add the second-highest dollar amount in history. More important, he will add almost as much in his first term as Obama did in two terms.

Lol lets assume what you say is the literal truth. 1 extra dollar a week.

An extra $52 a year. Crumbs Pelosi, a few years ago, was hyping up a bill that would have saved her constituents $40 a year. But...she is calling figures of $1000 a year crumbs now. Weird. But even $52 would be more than $40. So hey...she should be happen.

My claim wasn't wrong. You can't conceal and carry a rifle. The entire point of conceal and carry is to be able to quickly use a weapon if you need it. Then here comes Rob, talking about how you can fold up guns and conceal them. But that's not exactly something you can just whip out at any moment.

You're retarded. You can't just hide it under a coat if you want people to not know you have a weapon.

Um, we're talking about Trump's claim that the tax bill won't benefit him/the rich, not guns, so you're clearly melting down right now trying to shift your incorrect claims to a different subject. Not on my watch though. Nope.

On the topic of guns, there are folding rifles which you can conceal; this is a fact; it won't be argued, sport. So you're incorrect on both matters. Do better for yourself.

Oh, Trumpers...

This is important and something I did not point out: Trump will likely not win a second term so Obama will get the trophy for worst national debt numbers.

But Trump will almost hit Obama's numbers in 4 years what Obama took to do in 8 years.

Edit - I apologize for not representing these facts correctly. It is very obvious to anyone with a brain that the numbers are 4 years vs. 8 and that I did not intentionally mislead. However, it still looks like that...and I didn't mean to. sad

No, it is a valid point. If someone got to keep an extra $1000 after-tax throughout the year, that's only an extra $19.23 per week they're saving. If they're one of the few who got a one-time bonus of a $1,000, they'll only get to keep just over half of that after taxes.

It's not nothing, and it does help them a bit, but it does very little to alleviate their financial hardships in the long-term like increased wages and lower taxes would. In a few years, they'll benefit even less because their taxes will get raised, while the wealthy's taxes stay the same.

Yes, it is a valid point. Most Americans won't benefit much from such a slight and temporary increase.

Pelosi's comments about a tax plan saving Americans $40 a year don't change anything. Both plans blow, and don't help most Americans enough to get them out of their financial hardships.
