Which means leftists will be whining over it. Can't wait.

So the stock markets have already taken a dip based on this announcement. No wonder, because tariffs invariably spark retaliations which damage growth for all involved, and cause disruptions to supply chains and international commerce. And if Obama's tire tariff is anything to go by, these tariffs will end up costing more jobs than they save. So a stupid decision all around, basically.

Indeed, and of course other countries don't impose tariffs so it's wrong for us to do what nobody else does.

They havent actually gone into effect.

Really, the only use for tariffs is as leverage in negotiations to open up markets, and no-one should be under the illusion that it is actually a good thing to have them. The long term goal should be to eliminate such barriers, if possible.

Who knows really, might be scare tactics to get people to knock it off.

Of course I do:

GOP senators blast Trump's tariffs announcement

Trump announces steel and aluminum tariffs Thursday over objections from advisers and Republicans

GOP lawmakers push back on Trump's call for steel, aluminum tariffs

Pick your flavour smile

Surt, I give you permission for the redo thumb up YW

Anyhow, this failure should go in the Trump thread. No need to make a new thread every time Trump says or plans to do something stupid, imagine the cluster.

Hey bern bro, how many people would you estimate make up Trumps base?

Blindside12
Ben Sasse was the most critical calling it a "leftist administration" Dont see why leftists think thats a bad thing.

Sen Lee said "huge job-killing tax hike."

Sen Cornen "My reaction is I'm going to study exactly what the President did,"

Sen. Pat Roberts "They've already done this on washing machines and solar panels and the sorghum producer, one of the rare crops where we were making a profit, got targeted by China"

This is "Trumps Base" apparently.

Now him beating Hilary is even more impressive considering he did it only with a base of like 4 people.

Yeah I'm seriously not a fan of this. I don't like protectionist policy, I'm more of a free trade kinda guy, and Trump doesn't understand how trade works.

This is retarded, and I'm not gonna suck Trump's dick on this just cuz "**** the left"

Who knows really, might be scare tactics to get people to knock it off. Well sure, getting countries like China and India to open up their markets would be highly beneficial for the US. However, if Trump wanted to get those countries to play fair, then he should have just kept the TPP which would have given the US great leverage as leader of a massive trading bloc, and also eliminated about 18,000 tariffs on American goods with members of the pact. The fact that the Trump administration left the deal so abruptly makes me doubt that they think in the long term when it comes to trade policy, and this tariff-centered approach risks a trade war without guaranteed results that other countries will clean up their act.

Of course, I would be happy to be proven wrong here, but I'm not exactly optimistic that these tariffs were some sort of 4D chess for greater free trade, considering the Trump administration's previous signals on the subject. In that case, they're just an unnecessary burden on American consumers, and strain foreign relations.

When Goldman Sachs is being cited by the New York Times as an opponent, it's hard to side against it.

Tariffs may very well be bad for the general public, but I doubt anyone chiming in is talking about us. No, they only care about the 1%..

I used to be a free trade guy.

Then I realized what we have isn't free trade. It's a gestalt made out of corporatism, regulatory capture, and old fashioned corruption.

From that point of view, anything that gets those assholes complaining is fine with me. Tariff the crap out of them.

The general public is going to suffer anyways, as we always have, so make them eat it for a change.

The general public is going to suffer anyways, as we always have, so make them eat it for a change. Except they won't 'eat it'. The costs will just be passed onto the consumers. And tariffs are a form of corporatism as they protect uncompetitive industries from competition and insulate them from the need to change. So some of those 'assholes' will suffer, but another group of assholes will be benefiting, at the expense of the ordinary consumer.

The Ellimist
ITT: is Trump playing 4d chess or just being a moron? The eternal question.

Maybe.

I wouldn't call making shoes in Chinese sweatshops where labor is cheap and human rights laws lax as "competition", though. That's exploitation.

It's also a fact many companies lie about their overhead, and hoard a lot of money (Even after cutting their checks.)

Honestly, I'd be all about free trade if it meant what Rand said it did.. But it doesn't. Our version means businesses exist strictly to make their investors rich. The courts enforce this. If every business in America could cut 100% of their labor costs, they would, and would pretty much have to.

Imports, off shoring, exploitation overseas are all part that...

It's a mess, and I sure can't even begin to address it.. I'm also not really a "burn it all down" socialist. I just know enough to see the "social Darwinist" and "Commie pinko's" are talking into the wind, and big business does what big business does. Which is fleece and hoard, exploit and capture crony politicians and regulatory agencies.. Nickle and dime, any way you could, at any expense.

So yeah, you're probably right. In the end, there's only so far they can pass costs onto us, before no one can afford to pay for it, and then they won't be profiting off us anyways..

Peter Naravo is the guy who wants this to happen. He might know more then liberals about trade.

Infact Bernie was for this same thing.

Exactly, while the 1/5 of a cent increase in the cost of a can of soup won't matter, the cost of something like a car which consist of more than just a few ounces of steel will to the average person.
