I know the Jedi were Generals in the grand army of the Republic, but did they hold top rank on the battlefield? I ask because it seemed like they could walk into almost any battle and take full command.

"So if you're a captain, and I'm a jedi, then technically I outrank you, right?"
- Ahsoka to Rex, TCW Movie

"Admiral, you must abandon ship.
Not a chance.
But sir, with respect, that's an order!
-It may be your command, but it's my ship!"

Anakin to admiral Kilian

So unless there's a ranking higher than admiral that I'm not thinking of, Jedi appear to out-rank anyone; even if they're a f*cking padawan lol.

Yeah, Admirals and above outranked Jedi in military matters.

Clone: "General Skywalker... Admiral Tarkin has ordered that no one be allowed in there."
Anakin: "I don't care what she's been accused of! Let...Me...In!"
Clone: "Sorry, sir... The Admiral's orders stand. This is now a military operation, and under HIS jurisdiction."

*Anakin is escorted out of the facility*

The Jedi hadn't yet been formally stripped of any authority regarding Ahsoka, because Ahsoka herself was still recognized as a Jedi/Padawan at that point in the story.

The scene I quoted simply came down to a General being overruled by the standing orders of an Admiral.

Ergo:
"This is now a military operation, and under jurisdiction."

Nah, Padawans are commanders, above captains but beneath admirals.

It was a military matter and considering that it was thought to be from one of their own (which it was in Barriss) they probably wanted to keep Ahsoka isolated from any other Jedi.

It was a blanket order, though -- it didn't single out anyone in particular: "Admiral Tarkin has ordered that no one be allowed in there."

If Anakin held higher authority than Tarkin, the Clone likely would have allowed him to enter... We've seen this happen before in canon:

That said, I suppose this IS Tarkin we're talking about. The dude has always seemed to hold more sway/influence within his rank than everyone else, so maybe *that* is the reason why Anakin had to acquiesce to his orders in that instance... Perhaps a different Admiral wouldn't have held an equal level of authority there. /shrug
