He was just too influential as far as I can tell, he was well in with Thatcher and Prince Charles and all them. The BBC definitely turned a blind eye IMO, not sure about the police so much but apparently there are files where he is named as a suspect in some serial killings. There's also a theory that he may have committed the 'Bible John' murders in Scotland in the late 60's, that seems a bit of a stretch to me but it does indicate he was on somebodies radar at some point in the past and nothing developed.
